What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Shazam is an amazing -- if not always 100 percent effective -- app that identifies songs picked up by the iPhone's mic. If the app recognizes the song, it displays the name and artist along with a link to the iTunes store. Song names and lyrics can contain iffy language or mature references. Kids can post music information found through the app through a direct connection with Facebook or Twitter.

  • The app itself is a little disjointed, but activating the tagging process is easy: Just tap the main screen (or the tagging button in the upper right of other screens) and the app samples the music for about 1 seconds before attempting to return a title. Buying a song through Shazam is a simple matter of tapping a button. Unfortunately, as with all such apps, the trip into iTunes is one way only. To return to Shazam and tag another song you have to relaunch the app.

  • Every song that Shazam identifies generates a recommended list complete with iTunes purchase links.
  • Kids can log in to Facebook and Twitter through Shazam and share a music find with others. Also, the app can map where kids are when they tagged the song and lets them attach a photo to commemorate the moment, but this info stays private.

Is it any good?

Who sings that song? Shazam promises instant satisfaction by identifying any song you point the mic at. Unfortunately, it's not that good. It failed to identify about half the songs played over our laptop's speakers. It did better with loud, high-quality stereo music. But Shazam works only with recorded songs; it doesn't recognize live performances, such as your voice. We recommend applying your five bucks to Midomi Soundhound, which can do all this and more.

Good... With a downside...
I love this app its very good at recognising apps. But... there is an downside sometimes you may not realise but the song your listening to maybe uncensored but on shazam the lyrics contain explicit language. A great app but i guess 11 year old are mature enough for it!
