What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Smash Cops is a racing game where players pursue criminals, then force them off the road by repeatedly ramming their vehicles. While there's certainly a sense of violence to the game (and plenty of explosions), it's not a grisly title and doesn't revel in suffering (though players can hit innocent civilians as they pursue criminals). There are no language or sexuality concerns -- and the game is mercifully free of commercial influences. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

  • The game offers a new navigation technique that is effective, but takes a long while to get used to. Players could grow frustrated learning to control vehicles.
  • Police arrest fleeing suspects by ramming their cars until they crash. Cars can catch fire and explode. And several crashes are glorified in slow motion.

  • Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple's Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender's email address. With iOS 5, players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

Is it any good?

SMASH COPS is a game that has a single focus, but it does the job so well that you might brush past some of its flaws. Pursuing fleeing criminals is always fun -- and there's a visceral thrill that comes with forcing them off the road. The app also eliminates any camera issues by letting players view the action from the point of view of a news helicopter -- a nice way to add an element of drama to the game.

The "push" control schematic is a unique one that takes a little getting used to, but works in the end. And the graphics are fantastic. The downside is the missions eventually take on a sameness that will either leave you wanting more or wondering what the fuss was about. The answer, in large part, will depend on how quickly you've completed them.

Fun and intense.
You are a cop flying through the streets trying to bring down the bank robbers. Recklessly giving chase before they can leave the county. It's easy and fun. Theres no blood, and your the good guy so it should be ok for kids 10 and up.
