Parents need to know that Star Walk is a remarkably in-depth and detailed astronomy app, that can be used on a nighttime walk. Look up at the night sky, compare it to the star charts on your device, and know exactly what you're seeing up there in outer space. You will have to give the app permission to use your current location, though.
In addition to being an incredibly thorough and useful night sky guide for astronomy students (or amateur stargazers), STAR WALK is also a remarkably beautiful app. You can use it to find out what stars and planets are visible at any point in the sky at any point in time. See what's above you right now or use the "Time Machine" to see what'll be overhead at, say, 4:13 a.m. on Sept. 6, 2011. You can also use an interactive globe to change positions too; you'll see which portions of the Earth are in darkness at any given time, which just looks cool. You can tap on anything in space and get a full report on it. You can zoom in and out. You can toggle constellations on or off. You can choose to have your star charts show everything, or filter them by naked-eye visibility. There's so much you can do with this app -- the possibilities are astronomical.
