What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Stray Souls: Dollhouse Story - Collector's Edition HD is a horror-themed adventure game that mixes hidden object puzzles and light puzzles. When your husband mysteriously disappears, you'll have to find him, assisted by a creepy looking doll. The app is free, but only includes a portion of the full game, which must be purchased in-app for either $7 or $10 (the more expensive version includes a few bonuses). There's no blood to the violence, but the atmosphere is quite spooky at times and will be too much for young players. Also, users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

  • The app offers two difficulty levels, both of which offer hints when necessary. The "easy" level also guides players to the areas where they need to focus their attention.
  • There's no blood or gore, but there are plenty of spooky, scary moments in the game that might be intense for young players.

  • The main menu features ads for other games by the developer. Users who want to play the full version of the game must purchase it from within the app for either $7 or $10, depending on which edition they choose.
  • Minor privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple’s Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. With Game Center, players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender’s email address.

Is it any good?

While the story in STRAY SOULS: DOLLHOUSE STORY might not be the strongest in the app store, it does a masterful job of creating a spooky atmosphere that makes the story come alive. It's well-paced and scales well to both experienced puzzle/adventure gamers and newcomers to the genre. The heroine is a bit disappointing, though, in that she sometimes comes across as someone who is entirely dependent on her husband. (For instance, she notes at one point that she had never driven before her husband taught her how.)

All in all, though, the game is a clever blend of puzzle games with a story that twists nicely. It's certainly too intense for young players, but tweens and adults will have lots of fun with it.
