What parents need to know

Parents need to know that even though Swords and Soldiers' publisher has assigned itself a 4+ rating on iTunes and claims there is no violence, it contains frequent combat using a variety of weapons, explosions, and the words "Enemies Killed" and "Friends Killed" at the end of every level. Throughout the game, players are tasked with destroying enemy units with myriad weapons. This game is all about sending waves of soldiers to attack enemy characters, all of whom are human, though it is set in a medieval, cartoony environment. Additionally, users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

  • Ease of use3
    This game requires a lot of strategy in order to get the highest possible score and reach the final level. It requires players to set up allied troops such that the opposing enemy force will not be able to get from point A to point B, and they have limited control over the action after they set up their troops. As such, it takes someone with a keen mind to succeed in this game.
  • Violence3
    Violence is the one and only gameplay mechanic in this strategy game. Players are tasked with taking out an opposing enemy base and must destroy the other side's soldiers to accomplish this. Players do not have direct control over the combat. Instead, they 'purchase' medieval troops to send out to attack the enemy force with axes, swords, and other hand-to-hand weapons. The troops walk across a 2D environment and the goal is to get to the end of the level while successfully taking out all the enemies that stand in the way. The better they do, the more gold they earn to buy troops for the next level. Explosions, shouting sounds, and colorful bursts augment the constant cartoon combat, though everything is depicted from a zoomed-out view with no slow-motion or close-up effects.

    The enemy troops use the same character icons over and over, and one of them is a big, busty Viking woman who has oversized, shaking breasts.

Is it any good?

 

SWORDS AND SOLDIERS has a nice, fun visual style with customizable game modes that mean no two games will ever be the same. The mix of non-interactive tower defense strategy with limited real-time controls gives it a unique experience that sets it apart from similar apps. Overall, it's an action experience that offers both challenges and rewards, mixed in with a never-ending bout of combat and explosions to keep the intensity high.
