What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Thomas & Friends: Day of the Diesels is an app book adaptation of a Thomas the Tank Engine DVD movie. The story, which puts forth lessons about friendship, acceptance, and tolerance, centers on a rift between good buddies Thomas and Percy. When Thomas starts hanging out with new pals, Percy seeks friendship with the much maligned diesel engines. At one point, after the diesels' station is damaged, they live up to their bad reputation by trying to take over the station that belongs to the steam trains. Everyone learns to get along in the end, though. There are some scary moments, especially in a scene with a big fire.

  • Using the app should be perfectly easy for kids. Words in the text are highlighted to make following along simpler for new readers. And interactive hotspots are pointed out by glowing lights.
  • There is a big building fire and some moments that may be a bit scary for very young children.

Is it any good?

THOMAS & FRIENDS: DAY OF THE DIESELS has a far deeper and more nuanced plot than you might expect from a Thomas the Tank Engine tale. Characters' misconceptions of one another cause all sorts of problems and even result in some of those characters living up to the bad expectations others have of them. The moral may be a bit subtle for very young children, but it offers a good opportunity for parents to start a discussion about tolerance and stereotypes. In addition to a good story, the app offers lots of fun interactive bits (turning lights on and off, triggering dialogue bites, etc.) and has a nice set of puzzles and coloring pages as bonus material.
