What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue for iPad is an interactive ebook that retells the story of the Thomas the Tank Engine movie of the same name. The story has some bits that may be a little scary for younger kids, like a train that almost falls into the water (but is saved by Thomas), Thomas getting lost at sea, and a bunch of trains getting trapped in a cave-in. None of these events is depicted in too frightening of a way, though, and everything turns out well in the end. There are bonus puzzles, coloring pages, and dot-to-dots included with the app as well.

    Using the app is very simple (both the book and its accompanying activities). Interactive hotspots light up to show kids exactly where they should tap the pages. If kids tap a hotspot before the narrator is done reading a page, the narrator will pause at that point, but another quick tap allows him to resume right where he left off.

    There's a rockslide that traps Thomas and his friends in a tunnel. That's the scariest bit in the story.

Is it any good?

 

THOMAS & FRIENDS: MISTY ISLAND RESCUE FOR iPAD is an incredibly well-done interactive picture book. The story is exciting for young kids and easy to follow, and the interactive bits on each page are well-marked (with light-up spots) so that kids can figure out what they're supposed to tap. There's a nice deal of variety among the interactions, too -- some are triggered animations, some are sounds or voices, some are moving parts that react with real-world physics. It's all very impressive. Plus, you get a nice package of bonus activities as well: coloring pages, jigsaw puzzles, and connect-the-dots puzzles that become animated scenes when completed. Thomas fans will absolutely adore this app.
