What parents need to know

Parents need to know that The Three Little Pigs and the Secrets of a Popup Book presents a dark and creepy, old-style telling of the classic "three pigs" story. It also, however, offers a fascinating look into the way popup books are made. There are loads of interactive popup elements in the book, and for each, kids can press the "x-ray" button and see behind the illustrations to discover how a real popup book would be made.

  • Turning pages is no problem. Nor is touching the little x-ray goggles that let you see into the mechanisms behind the pages.
  • This is a dark, old-fashioned Grimm-style telling of the classic fairy tale, in which two of the little pigs -- and the wolf -- get eaten.

Is it any good?

With all of its very neat and imaginative interactive popup elements (pigs you can slide back and forth, apples on strings that get lowered and swung around, etc.), its fun and whimsical sound effects (the wolf's huffing and puffing is hilarious), and its awesome replication of real-world physics (gravity is fully at play here), THE THREE LITTLE PIGS AND THE SECRETS OF A POPUP BOOK would be a fantastic five-star app already. But it becomes truly awesome with its added "x-ray specs" ability. On each of the popup pages, you can tap a little pair of "3D glasses" and watch the screen go black-and-white in a cool x-ray effect that lets you see straight through the illustrations and illuminates the paper-and-string gears and levers that make everything move. It's truly fascinating. This is one of the most imaginative ebooks apps yet.
