What parents need to know

Parents need to know that TRON: Legacy is an action racing game based on the recent cinematic release. Players can ride the film series' most recognizable vehicle -- the Light Cycle -- in a series of races as well as pilot the hulking Recognizers and shoot down enemy tanks and Light Cycles. There are a number of different tracks, which gives some variety, but the general play scheme is the same from level to level. Additionally, despite updates from Disney, a large number of users continue to complain of the game crashing regularly (though we did not experience this in our testing). The game's controls are very imprecise as well, making it hard to control the Light Cycles, which could frustrate younger players. You can play against strangers in the game's multiplayer feature, but there is no interaction among players aside from the gameplay.

  • The game's controls are quite sluggish and imprecise, which can make controlling vehicles difficult and frustrating.
  • You'll try to knock opponents off their vehicles and off the course in Light Cycle races and will destroy enemy tanks and riders in the game's other primary battle.

  • The app is primarily a promotional vehicle for Disney's TRON: Legacy film.
  • Some privacy concerns. Users will have to register to play online, but the service only requests a username and password -- no personal information.
Some privacy concerns. Players can also opt in to Apple’s Game Center to play against friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname. Requesting or accepting a friend via email will reveal the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and the sender’s email address.

Is it any good?

TRON: LEGACY focuses on the right things -- Light Cycles and Recognizers -- but suffers from poor controls and apparent game bugs that cripple the title. Driving and racing Light Cycles can be a breathtaking experience, but because the controls are slow to respond to your actions, it's akin to a drunk driver hopping onto a motorcycle. You'll wobble across the road and bump into walls regularly. The game's shooting sections -- using those Recognizers -- are fun, but again stumble, since you're not able to control the vehicles as precisely as you would like to. The game's multiplayer option is one of its stronger elements, as playing against a live opponent is more fun than challenging the app. And visually, the game is quite impressive. With more polishing, this is a title that could have life long after the movie is gathering dust in your DVD collection.
