What parents need to know

Parents need to know that WINtA is a free rhythm game app that was created by PaRappa the Rapper developer Masaya Matsuura in conjunction with the OneBigGame charity. Players must tap sequences of colored squares that appear in different patterns in time to the rhythm of the musical track playing in the background. The game comes with one track, Matsuura's own "WINtA," which stands for "War Is Not the Answer." Additional tracks must be purchased from the iTunes store.

  • The game is easy to learn, with instructions clearly explained through a short tutorial. Players tap sequences of colored squares in time to the rhythm, based on audio and visual cues. Higher difficulty levels (there's Easy, Medium, and Hard) feature moving squares, "whammy" squares to drag, and tapping more than one square at a time.

  • There are two ad windows on the title screen advertising other apps and featured artists whose tracks can be purchased. There's also a link to a store where players can purchase new songs.
  • Some privacy concerns. Users can opt in to ngmoco's Plus+, an interactive network that allows users to upload real avatar photos, share high scores, and connect with friends through Facebook and other social networks.

Is it any good?

WINtA's gameplay is fun, but the app never gets a chance to prove itself. Only one music track is included with the free download, with additional tracks costing $.99 each. The track library is woefully small (only 4 songs at the time of writing) with no way to preview the songs to see if they fit your musical tastes before you shell out the cash. The in-game advertising, which appears as an ad bar along the bottom of the main menu, seems out of place given the app's affiliation with a charity.
