What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Wubbzy's Pirate Treasure is an interactive storybook app based on an episode of the Nick Jr. TV series Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! Kids join Wubbzy, Daizy, Widget, and Walden on an adventure to find pirate treasure, and learn along the way that the journey itself is way more fun than the reward at the end. The 21-page story is broken up by four interactive mini-games, and kids can jump to any page via a table of contents.

  • Easy to use. Kids turn pages by tapping an arrow icon, and can skip to any page or mini-game via a table of contents.

What kids can learn

3

Kids can learn about cooperation while reading about how Wubbzy and his friends work together to meet challenges like repairing a leaky pirate ship. Wubbzy's Pirate Treasure, an interactive book app, also lets kids practice reading, spelling, listening, and reading comprehension as they follow along with a pre-recorded narrative as words are highlighted, or read out loud by themselves. Wubbzy's Pirate Treasure is an engaging story that can help kids practice reading skills.

What's it about?

Wubbzy's Pirate Treasure offers three modes: Just a Book mode lets kids read by themselves or with a parent; Read to Me mode highlights each word as the sentences are read out loud by a narrator; and Read & Play mode lets kids make fun things happen by tapping on the scenery. Four simple mini-games complement the narrative. For example, kids can help the gang dress up as pirates by dragging costumes onto each character.

Is it any good?

WUBBZY'S PIRATE TREASURE is a bit unusual among storybook apps in that it separates the story into an interactive mode (that lets kids tap on the scenery to see fun animations) and a non-interactive mode that's strictly for reading along to, rather than combining them into one experience. Not that the story suffers from this at all. Regardless of which mode kids choose to enjoy, they'll be treated to wonderful cartoon graphics, fun sound effects, and a story with a wonderful message. Parents are encouraged to reflect on the story with their kids with the help of sample questions located in a Grown-Up's Corner section. Overall, a well-produced app with a great message.

How kids will learn

In Wubbzy's Pirate Adventure kids turn pages by tapping arrow icons, and can read out loud or listen to a voice-actor read the book to them while following along with the text. A third mode lets kids tap on the screen to interact with the scenery and characters in fun ways. The Grown-Up's Corner helps kids extend their learning by reflecting on questions like "What was your favorite part of the story?" or "What other animals have tails?"

How parents can help

  • Reflect on the story with your kid by going through the questions in the Grown-Up's Corner. Ask additional questions that help your child connect the story to his or her life in some way.
  • If your kid loves Wubbzy, consider visiting the Nick Jr. website together.
