Parents need to know that ZombieSmash HD is a cartoonish, but very bloody, tower-defense style game. While the zombies in the game themselves aren't scary, players repel them by flinging them in the air and to the ground, where their bodies explode with blood, bones, and stars (which can be used to buy weapon upgrades). At the end of each level, players kill a single zombie, sending the game into slo-mo mode, giving the player an opportunity to take a picture of the dismembered zombie bouncing and email it to friends or post it to Facebook or Twitter. Despite this, it's worth noting the game leans toward comedic rather than Night of the Living Dead. Bonus weapons include a giant cinder block and flaming asteroids. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional. There is also an identical version of the game available for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
While its excessive use of cartoon gore makes ZOMBIESMASH HD a poor choice for young players, older players may be charmed by the game. It's a slightly different take on the reliable tower defense genre, where waves upon waves of enemies rush your stronghold, but flicking them away is fun. The game also requires a bit of strategy in determining when best to use the weapons in your reserve. (There's something satisfying about flattening zombies with wrecking balls.) It's frenetic action that doesn't get boring -- and the game offers several different modes (campaign, endless siege, and sandbox), that offer a good bit of variety.
