Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 16–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Vampires are self-serious and dedicated killers, humans argue among themselves, survivors depend on courageous martyrs.
  • Violence:

Gory displays of vampirism throughout: They chomp on their victims, chew their necks, and suck their blood. They also beat, kick, and throw themselves on prey and vehicles. Humans use multiple weapons, including a sunlamp, fires, guns, axes, and vehicles. An early car crash is abrupt and loud. Dead dogs are ravaged and bloody -- a precursor to the discovery of human bodies that are mauled, gnawed, and very bloody. Attacks are chaotic (fast cuts and close-ups), with groaning and growling sounds. Shooting leaves vampires with limbs and heads blown away.
  • Sex:

Gruesome "sexual" play between male and female vampire (they hiss at each other and bare their teeth, the woman pawing at her torso in a demonstration of passion). Earnest declarations of love between protagonists.
  • Language:

Profanity includes several uses of "f--k" and lots of "s--t"s (once with "head"), as well as "damn," "hell," and "bitch."
  • Consumerism:

Repeated shots of Chevrolet truck logos, references to Oreos and Snapple.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Characters drink and refer to whiskey and vodka. A grandmother grows marijuana to soothe her cancer (a baggie appears in a desk drawer, and plants are shown in her house). Someone thinks a vampire is a human "coked up on PCP."

What Parents Need to Know

About 30 Days of Night

Parents need to know that this vampire horror movie (which was based on a graphic novel) isn't for kids. While the themes aren't especially sophisticated, the imagery is very bloody, with bodies getting torn, beaten, chewed, and graphically abused. Children are in danger and killed (one is a bloody-mouthed vampire who's eventually slain by an adolescent boy), and there are explosions, car crashes, shootings, foot chases, and lots of tense scenes. Language includes several uses of "f--k" and other profanity, there's some drinking, and a grandmother grows medicinal marijuana.

Gory? Yes. Great? No, but still decent.

Just watched the movie. Very violent and gory, but not to the point where it feels perverse. The most graphic decapitation I've ever seen and a good bit of profanity, too. Nothing a mature teen can't handle. Not the most original movie ever, but still a good thriller that's worth watching for some nice scares.

    NOT a kids movie

I saw this on cable and was surprised that it was pretty good. The issue is the repeted gore throughout the movie. Up there with Hostle and Saw.I'm not bothered by that stuff but this movie almost goes overboard. If you like that kind of flick you will like this.

    Not the Least bit Scary

I saw this movie when I was 12 and it wasn't scary in the least. There was a brutal murder of some sort every minute or so for a while after the sun goes down, but it went as any horror movie does. I think it's fine for ages 12 and up.

    Graphic yet amazing!

This movie was great. The ending was very unexpected. It makes me cry everytime and when I cry it means it's a good movie. The plot was good. Plus the guy is a cutie. It's not good for children under the age of 15. I'm 16. and this movie has got me buy chain. I Love It!

An adult version of Twilight, but worse.

I seen this movie last weekend for Halloween. In, the beginning automatically, it's scary. Tons of blood. Is a very good vampire movie, but I am more interested in Twilight. This movie is rated R, but on some terms it's basically knowing your kid and if they can take the blood, or flesh being burned right in front of your face on screen. I normally don't get nightmares, but had them for about 2 days. Not really scary, just tons of blood and curssing.

    Vampire-iffic

If you like vampires this movie is great. The make-up and costume really made it go from scary to eerie. My 15 year old likes zombies and vampire shows and we like scary shows so it was a thumbs up for us. My 9 year old likes them to but it's too bloody for children, so we opted not to take him, and that was the right decision. If you like action and more exciting vampires than the norm, you will love it too.

    good fright

Very frightening film. Well acted with genuine suspence. Terrible ending, however. And not a film for kids.

    Great Vampire Horror

I enjoyed the plot and storyline. The unique Alaskan winter setting, where the sun doesn't come up for 30 days, really adds a frightening dimension to the movie. Vampires were portrayed in their most simplest and barbaric state, with very little need for lengthy dialogue, which is quite appropriate for their characters. I would not recommend this movie for younger viewers, as it is very graphically violent. However, I do appreciate the bird's eye camera view of vampires attacking Barrow's citizens. It added to the horror. This is a great horror flick. Just when you thought that you've seen every type of vampire movie and that there couldn't be any more variety, this flick refreshes and renews the vampire movie genre. I highly recommend it for adults.

    Amazing but Gory

I absolutely love horror movies and this movie completely fueled that. It was rather gory but the storyline was amazing and the make up and comstuming really help you believe in the vampires. I would caution against taking any kids younger than 16 to this movie, unless you know they're okay with the gore. It does have an underlying story between the main character, his soon to be ex-wife and his younger brother. While i didn't like the ending at least it kept true to the graphic novels.

    Pretty stupid and boring

This movie wasn't that great it was really bloody and violent but if your kids are 15 or older and mature enough to handle these kind of movies then let them go see it but it isn't a very good movie. So i'd wait for the DVD if you really want to see it.
