Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 15–16

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Some slurs, including calling Middle Eastern people "rag heads," and patriotic people "flag monkeys." Chloe lies about who she is and desserts her regiment.
  • Violence:

Chloe punches John. Another American brandishes a gun and says he has a plan to kill the president. Chloe steals the man's gun and holds it up to him.
  • Sex:

John makes an obscene comment about George Bush looking like he's "Curious George getting a handjob." John masturbates to a newscast. Gloria hits on John. John and Chloe kiss. It's implied that John and Gloria have sex.
  • Language:

Considerable swearing, including "ass," "f--k," "tight ass," "bitch," "godamn," "holy s--t," "piss," "dick," "p--y," and "asshole."
  • Consumerism:

Some brands are visible, including Curious George, Puma, Quaker Oats, Luna Bars, and Apple laptops.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Considerable drinking, and on at least two occasions, John and Chloe get very drunk. Gloria smokes pot. A Vietnam-era draft-dodger smokes a cigarette.

What Parents Need to Know

About Blue State

Parents need to know that the considerable swearing, drinking, and political diatribes make this a more mature movie. Plus John has sexual fantasies about a news anchor and masturbates, and it's implied that John sleeps with Gloria. There's also some smoking, including pot. The subject matter is likely to be objectionable to families who aren't pretty left-leaning politically.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about how their kids feel about the war and the political process. How do John's decisions reflect his politics? If you say you believe something, how do you show it?
