What Parents Need to Know

This review of Caddyshack was written by Alex Orner and Marjorie Kase

Parents need to know that this film requires a mature viewer. Younger audiences will not understand some of the sexual references. Most are blatant, including graphic sex scenes and female nudity. Many characters use profane language. The film features several offensive jokes, one that targets African-Americans and others that use derogatory names for women. Although young teens will enjoy the "edginess" of the film, much of the humor may go over their heads.

Families Can Talk About

Talk to your kids about the media in their life. We have more tools and tips that can help
  • Families can talk about the vulgar and offensive nature of some of the characters. Parents will most likely highlight the negative repercussions of many of the characters' decisions, since there are few positive noteworthy actions.
  • Why does Bill Murray's character recklessly drink and smoke marijuana? How does Ted Knight's elitist nature isolate him from others?

More on Caddyshack

What’s the Story?

In CADDYSHACK, Ty Webb (Chevy Chase) and Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield) lead the charge in unmasking the seedy underbelly of the elitist, Bushwood Country Club. When nefarious club president Judge Elihu Smails (Ted Knight) schemes to convert the golf course into a property development, Webb (a man with a lifestyle and demeanor even Hugh Heffner would envy) and Czervik (an unwelcomed, uncouth member of the club) challenge Smails to an all or nothing golf tournament. Smails' "secret weapon" (screwy groundskeeper Carl Spackler [Bill Murray]) provides much of the movie's comic relief, as he attempts to take-out a crafty gopher.

Is It Any Good?

At the time of its release, no film had ever pushed the envelope of crude humor like Caddyshack. Having emerged from Saturday Night Live with incredible success, legends Bill Murray and Chevy Chase were in their comedic prime. Their ability to riff one-liners and develop side-splitting characters made Caddyshack one of the most quotable films of all time.

    Naked People... They're Everywhere

There's lots of naked women in this movie. My mother made me turn it off halfway through. I'm not big on watching sex so I wasn't a big fan. If you don't mind nudity, it's a good watch.

    over-rated.

An over-rated movie not deserving of its classic status. Bill Murray was pure gold and Mr. Dangerfield had his moments but overall, this falls flat on its face. And yeah, the film could have easily done without the sex scene....totally unnecessary.

It had been a long time since my husband and I had seen this movie. We decided to watch it ourselves before letting our 14 year old see it. I'm glad we did. She won't be seeing it anytime soon. Also, while this movie did have a few funny scenes (mostly involving Bill Murray) it wasn't nearly as funny as I remembered it to be. It was just OK.

    yay.

I love this movie. I got it for my eighth b-day. I watched it with my mom, and I really have to say I could'nt find anything too bad in it. Ok there was topless female nudity, but only one part of it was sexual and that was brief.

    Five star rateing,

This movie is hil-ar-i-ous! I loved it! I have to say that I disagree with the kid who said that it should be rated PG-13, but I can understand why a 12 year old like me might want to see it. I am 12, unlike what it says next to my screen name above this review, but I consider myself a year older in my maturity and I understand some of the adult humer that most 12 year olds wouldn't. My mom made me fast forward through some of the inapropreit scenes (if you see it you'll recognize them) so I can't tell you the inapropreit details so you can avoid them but I can tell you that Caddyshack is no good for anyone under the age of 18 unless it is someone above the age of 12 and has a mature older mentor there to fast forward through the bad scenes. I understand why a parent would want to. Hope my review helps you. -i love dogs

    great.

i cannot think of why this movie was rated R. there are maybe 10 swear words in the whole thing. and they're not the F-word. this is a hilarious movie about golfing. i can't think of anything that would possibly innapropriate for teenagers. seriously.

    Funny!

Caddy shck is not a s bad as the commen sense people make it sound, Its a good movie! There's nothing in the movie kids don't hear at school or talk about. Also don't complain that your 5 year old got a bad message from the movie, he's 5 what do you expect. And it's not like your 13 old kid going to go out a nd smoke pot after the movie. They might dump an O Henry bar in the pool but thats all.
