Why We Rated This on for Ages 7 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Townsfolk judge Chicken Little harshly at first, but they come around when they find he's right.

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness :

Some alien invasion violence (pounding music, alien machines zapping animals to nothing and setting things on fire).
  • Sexy stuff :

Some suggestions concerning a piggy's gay-leaning sexual orientation.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

Spoofs on news, fashion, and sports magazines (Cosmo-Mallard, Modern Mallard, Newsquack).
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Chicken Little

Parents need to know that, for a kids' film, this one features prominent and repeated images of mayhem. Its opening sequence, which shows citizens running around in a panic and screaming, is somewhat frantic; it might be a bit too intense for some sensitive younger viewers. While much of the action is benign and cartoonish (crowds in a panic, animal children playing aggressive dodgeball or baseball and falling from windows), the film ends up with an alien invasion, with giant tripods and creatures inspired by War of the Worlds, and some potentially scary Predator or Aliens style music. One character is readable as "gay," as he adores disco and cowers before his mother, and another, a tough, baseball-playing female fox, is transformed into a traditional girly-girl, as a partly jokey reinforcement of traditional gender roles.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the relationship between the father and son, as Chicken Little wants so desperately to please his dad. How might his father show more faith in his son, rather than expecting the worst? How might Chicken Little trust his father to appreciate his own interests and identity, rather than trying so hard to be the son he imagines his father "wants" (that is, a baseball player like his father was)?

    My concerns are:
    • Excessive violence

What others don't mention about the alien invasion is the constant "vaporizing" of characters. I thought it would just happen once or twice, but characters kept getting vaporized - totally freaking out our son. We left the theater with our five year old.

    Ok for kids.

This it a good movie for kids 4+. Sure it has a little violence, but besides that, the movie is okay. Even the G rating proves it.

I rate this title iffy for age 4 and give it 3.0
    My concerns are:
    • Excessive violence

Funny, but fast paced and scary parts for younger kids.

While there is funny content, the story jumps from step to step far too quickly, as is often the case too many insider adult jokes and the quick devolution into killer aliens was quite scary for the younger kids. Also, as others noted, using things like "wanna be my lover" and other content seems more of a tool for a "sure thing laugh" rather than creative content that stands by itself. Again as others said: why unspoken the missing parent? Really? Needed? That all being said, I was laughing myself. I think keeping it at least to a mature 6 year old and up is warranted, if only for the killer aliens.

    A G rated alien adventure

This movie has some scenes where aliens attack the city. Even though it has aliens (one of my favorite things to read about), it isn't one of my favorites.
