Why We Rated This on for Ages 13 and Up

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Characters often behave in calculated ways -- including using other people -- to advance their own political agendas or careers. Characters do have strong political ideals and dreams, although those ideals don't always make things better for a country's citizens.
  • Violence:

Political rioting and unrest are depicted throughout the movie, including scenes where soldiers are shown beating protesters. An earthquake ravages a town; bloody victims are shown in various states of injury. A girl is grief-stricken over the death of her father; she and her mother and siblings, however, are banned from his funeral by the man's legal wife because the children are bastards.
  • Sex:

A married tango singer is having an affair with a younger woman. They are shown in bed together. A musical number implies that the same woman later goes through a string of lovers in order to advance her career. A high-ranking military official has a much younger lover, who looks like she's still a teenager. No sex is shown, but his new girlfriend kicks her out of his bed and home.
  • Language:

Some profanity, including "bitch," and a gesture that means "f--k you."
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Characters are seen drinking cocktails.

What Parents Need to Know

About Evita

Parents need to know that this movie depicts complex political themes, some violence (brutality of soldiers against citizens, bloody victims of an earthquake), and sexual innuendo (showing lovers in bed, but no sex).

    Beautiful

This movie was delightful! The singing was wonderful, and I LOVE Antonio Banderas' voice! Even more than Gerard Butler in Phantom of the Opera. There is some content. The sex is mentioned in CSM's review, but there is more language than they mention including d-mn, h-ll, God's name in vain, -ss, and some others. So be cautious when you watch this movie. I recommend an edited version, such as ClearPlay DVD Player (clearplay.com)

Musical Fun for Ages 12 and up!

Evita is the musical story of Eva Duarte de Peron, the spirited leader of Argentina in the 40's. Eva rises above poverty and a scandalous past to marry Argentine leader Juan Peron. She helps his campaign and he becomes President, catapulting her into a position of great power and influence. Eva is played by Madonna and Antonio Banderas is Che, the narrator to the story who always happens to be where Eva is (big conincidence). The supporting cast includes Johnathan Pryce as Peron, and Jimmy Nail as Eva's former lover, the singer Agustin Magaldi. Mild Sex, Violence, and Language make this film innapropriate for anyone under the age of tweleve though. But if you decide this film is alright for your child, you will love it!
