Why We Rated This on for Ages 10 and Up

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Main character is occasionally impudent towards the adults. Friends work together to help a teacher in trouble, but one of the students was the trigger for the man's problems. Nice father-daughter relationship depicted, and a nasty sibling relationship takes a turn for the better by the final credits.
  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Very, very mild teenaged flirting and discussing of crushes.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

The main character is an affluent teen girl obsessed with fashion and shopping. Tony private school students are depicted with latest clothes and cell phones, and "scholarship student" is synonymous with "poor." Barney's department store gets name dropped; while getting spa treatments and spending lots of money are glorified as suitable activities for teens.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Get a Clue

Parents need to know that the movie centers around a pampered teen girl whose obsessions with fashion and gossip make her a less-than-ideal heroine. Working with a multicultural group of friends she finds some redemption as the students try to solve a mystery involving a teacher, but his troubles began as result of the heroine's snooping. Brooklyn is depicted as a third-world country to the Manhattan teens.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about Lexy's materialism. Is the lifestyle she's living realistic? What about the wardrobes she and her best friend wear to school? She defends her article on her teacher's love life as "human interest" instead of "gossip." Do you think there's a difference? Should she have written the story?
