Why We Rated This on for Ages 8 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

One character dominates and manipulates those around her, but she realizes the error of her ways and makes amends in the end. A teen learns that being true to himself and considering his friends' feelings are more important than personal ambition.

What to watch out for

  • Violence & scariness :

    Not an issue.
  • Sexy stuff :

Mild flirting among teens, with lots of near kisses (and a couple of real ones at the movie's end). A male character refers to a girl as a "little hottie."
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

Part of Disney's HSM marketing/product juggernaut.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About High School Musical 2

Parents need to know that although this energy-packed sequel to the wildly popular High School Musical presents a fairly sanitized view of teen life -- wrongs are righted in the end, all parties walk away friends, etc. -- it also has plenty of positive messages about being true to yourself, following your own path in life, and valuing true friendship. Staying true to its squeaky-clean predecessor, the sequel spends more time on music than on making out (in fact, the only kisses come at the end and are very sweet), and there's really nothing here that's likely to concern parents of tweens.
