What Parents Need to Know

About The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

Parents need to know that this film is absolutely not for kids. It includes incessant, vicious attacks on a family traveling through the New Mexican desert by a group of mutants. The violence is startling, explicit, and aggressive (dogs are knifed and eviscerated; humans suffer knifing, dismembering, shooting, burning at a stake). Someone bites off a parakeet's head. The monstrous mutants watch their prey through binoculars, which the film renders as spooky "surveillance" imagery. Women appear undressed as monsters try to rape them. Characters smoke, drink beer and margaritas, and refer to "the chronic"/pot. Opening credits sequence features ghastly victims of radiation, in jars and photos.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the film's two family units: How do the travelers/victims turn desperate and become like their attackers? How do the film's graphic displays of violence (now a staple of horror/slasher movies) serve specific functions? Do viewers want to be scared or repulsed, to identify with victims or monsters, or to take pleasure in the technical expertise of the violence? Why do horror movies remain so popular, especially with teens?

Great Movie, Off For Some Adults

Brutal, bloody, disturbing, and violent. It depends on the kid and how mature they are. This is something that could possibly happen out in N.M. where they test this stuff. They've found messed up animals out there that were extra violent, why not humans?

    OK...

I only saw the ending on HBO2 and I thought it was sick. This is not for kids (I know that sounds funny that a 12-year-old is saying that).

    Good...

I have seen this movie... i believe... 7 times. Saw it first at he age of 12 with my 10 year old sister. We loved the movie and waited forever for the second one. If everyone is so freaked about the gore get a life... its called a HORROR movie... restricting kids from movies actually makes kids want to see them more... If the kids really want to see the movie... trust me they will.

I had sooo much fun watching this movie. I watched it with my brother and we laughed through the whole thing. The violence and gore was so over the top that it was obviously fake. It's nice to see that the film makers are trying to scare you and gross you out, but that movie just wasn't as scary as I was hoping. There wasn't enough suspense and we didn't see enough of how the mutants lived. I don't want to say it was pathetic, (b/c it kind of was...) but if they want you to believe that something like this could actually happen, it needs to be more realistic. (Too much blood, too few wounds) All things considered, I thought this was an entertaining movie. There were a few things that would've made it better, but all in all, a good movie.

    I was SO scared!

Well. This movie is very gory and I was even scared. Young girls would be scared because there is a scene of rape and a man burned alive. It's a good movie overall but it may give you nightmares!

    For mature kids.

I seen this movie when i was ten. Of course, you'd think kids shouldn't see it. But that depends on how mature you kid is. Whether he/she can take this movie without nightmares. I myself found it a bit gory, since their dad is tied to a tree and burned while the two mutants go into the motor home. It is a fun for horror movie lovers, because it's jump-out scary. I loved this movie, since it's graphics are well, and there are great actors. As for the gore...well...it depends if you are ready to handle a movie. I didn't think this movie was as bad as movies like Saw. People overreact like saying "NOT FOR KIDS". That's up to the parents. Gore gore gore galore in this movie. Dogs being eaten, waking up in a tub full of limbs and heads [this part is very scary, for the face and expression may frighten kids], fingers chopped off, and a axe to the head. It is up to the parents, but i personally do NOT think this movie is as bad as people think.

    Parent should stand up!

Take it from someone who knows . . . the ratings system is simply a vehicle of the major studios . . . no child should be exposed to this violence, and until these films receive the adults only rating of NC-17 they deserve, your kids CAN sneak into these films in multiplexes where every auditorium can't be policed. If the MPAA is really supposed to be FOR parents, then stand up and let them know that films with lenient ratings like this, demonstrate they aren't.

    Great movie!

Yes, it's gory, scary, and quite sad. (a couple parents die) but it's still a really good movie. I wouldn't let anyone under the age of 14 watch this though. Anyone who is faint of heart, impressionable, or easily scared would not like this movie. However, that aside, this is still a worthwhile film, terrifying and thrilling, and will keep you on the edge of your seat.
