After watching snippets of "Ice Age 3" on a flight back to L.A., we thought our girls might like the first "Ice Age," not realizing how much violence there is in the movie. Should've checked Common Sense first! Definite moments of peril, a saber-tooth lion getting stabbed by falling ice, etc. make this a big NO for anyone younger than fourth grade, in my opinion. Too bad, because the squirrel is hilarious!

What Parents Need to Know
About Ice Age
Parents need to know that the characters face peril several times throughout the movie, and it may be upsetting for younger children. The mother of a young child is killed (off-screen) saving the child?s life. Another character recalls the death of his family. While it is fairly mild on the "Bambi" scale, the issues of human hunting of animals, animal predators, and extinction are raised. A character makes a skeptical comment about "mating for life." There is some mild diaper humor.

Families Can Talk About
- Families can talk about what Manny says about members of a herd being willing to risk their lives for each other. Why was it so important for Manny to return the baby, even though the humans had hunted his herd? How did that help to heal some of Manny's sadness? Why did Diego change his mind about Manny? Why did Manny change his mind about Sid? Was it because of something Sid did or because of something Manny learned about himself, or both? What is different about the way that Diego and Manny react to human attacks?

cute movie for kids
I thought that this was such a cute movie for kids. The film combines comedy and adventure to keep children entertained and laughing throughout the entire film. At the same time it exhibits some very valuable lessons probably the most important and the overall theme for that matter as being the importance of friendship. The characters are also very diverse, and I think that this teaches children that it’s okay to be different, and to accept people for who they are. Sid is loud and obnoxious, but he is still the glue that sort of holds the three together. Manny is quiet and reserved, and he seems to have the most common sense. Diego is a bit cruel but he still has a sense of humor. As Sid says, they are the weirdest herd that he has ever seen. I would definitely recommend this to kids and parents. This is a movie that parents would enjoy watching with their kids, and could offer a bit of an explanation for the theme and the deeper meaning. I think that really young kids may have a hard time understanding what the overall film is trying to convey. I would say it is probably more age appropriate for children between the ages of 7-10. I give this movie an A for its humor, and the fact that it keeps viewers interested and entertained, but also for its overall theme and lessons.

Hilarious
This movie was so funny! I enjoyed watching it again and again. It is a great family fun movie. It had me laughing through the whole thing! And the squirrel and sloth were so funny. Diego was my favorite character though. If you haven't seen this movie yet you should see it.

fun movie, for older children
just be aware that there are a couple of close to the line language moments and a long sexual reference that is pretty obscure until one character calls another a "pervert". I was worried that this would create questions from my kids.

An animated classic! Unlike the sequal!
