Nonstop hilarity for families; some bawdy humor.

Why We Rated This on for Ages 13 and Up

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Humorous characters believe they're on a mission ordained by God. One character kills indiscriminately, saying "I can't help myself." Women are portrayed as either decrepit nags or virginal nymphs.
  • Violence:

Cartoonish violence -- including severed limbs and slashed throats -- and lots of fake blood. Several swordfights.
  • Sex:

A castle full of teen vestal virgins asks to be spanked and offers oral sex to Sir Galahad.
  • Language:

Relatively mild obscenities: "s--t," "bastard," "bitching," "pig dogs" and other colorful insults.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Knights of Camelot drink and dance, but nothing overt.

What Parents Need to Know

About Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Parents need to know that Monty Python's comedy was rated PG before the advent of PG-13. The entire vestal virgin sequence is filled with sexual innuendo and proposition -- but that's the iffiest content. Some of the rapid-fire jokes won't be detected or even understood by the youngest teens, and it's possible teens unfamiliar with this style of comedy won't get it at first. The violence is obviously fake -- lots of gushing blood, killer rabbits, etc. God is depicted in an animated segment as being tired of overly contrite and "depressing" followers.

Cheesy fun!! Fake blood galore!! Ridiculousness!!

Best movie!!! Definitely not to be taken seriously!! If you do not think stupid things are funny or have an amazing sense of humor ( meaning you laugh at just about anything) then this movie is not for you! I have many friends who refuse to watch it because of the mere stupidity of it and other friends who can't get enough of it...I guess it is really up to you and your opinion! I would not let the younger ones watch one scene but over all, besides looks of fake blood and some language, it is pretty clean.

  2. I rate this title iffy for age 10 and give it 3.0
    My concerns are:
    • Excessive violence

Most people seem to like this film the best out of all the Python films. I personally liked "Life Of Brian" more and have not seen "Meaning Of Life" yet. Don't let the PG-rating fool you. It's at least a hard PG-13. It's fairly violent and bloody, there are sexual references and I believe I heard about 1 use of the f-word. If you removed the nudity from "Life Of Brian", it would actually be tamer than this film imo. If your let your kids watch violent films, then you will have no problem with this one.

  3. I rate this title on for age 10 and give it 4.0
    My concerns are:
    • Inappropriate language
    • Negative message
    • Negative role models

Silly and pointless yet very fun for those who just want to sit back and laugh. Can get graphic (e.g The Black Knight and the Rabbit of Caerbannog) and the searing isn't censored, but a good watch for mature teens and pre teens.

    Hilarious Comedy; Great for Teens

This is probably the best comedy I've seen in a while. It had me bursting out laughing at every scene. I was surprised at the lack of vulgar content in the movie, but it was a pleasant surprise. There were a couple of curse words, but I could count the number of curse words and sex references on one hand. I wouldn't recommend it for younger children, though, mainly because they wouldn't get the comedy and they might think that the absurd amount of obviously fake blood is real and be scared by the movie.

    Perfect for age 11-Adult

No concerns. Role models? In a comedy? I watched this movie when I was eleven and I loved it! Some of the humor may be a bit much but little kids will laugh at the killer rabbit and won't get the teen virgins part. For kids that get it it is HILARIOUS. I understand the person who did not like it. Some people like different comedy styles. Parodies are not for them. Awesome movie! ;)

Awesome movie!!! As long as you have some background.

I know it's going to sound weird having a 12 year old saying that Monty Python and the Holy Grail is her favorite movie, but it's true!!! As long as you've had some sex education classes before, you should be fine. It's actually really funny!!! :)

Monty Python Humor never intended for kids!

I love it as an adult but just don't think that it is age appropriate for kids. I had first watched it long ago and remembered the humor in it. I watched it again before showing it to my 14 and 11 year old and decided within the first 15 minutes they wouldn't be seeing it soon.

    This is funny?

I hate how you'll tell someone that you didn't like this movie and then they'll get all defensive and proudly declare that you have no sense of humor whatsoever. My friends told me it was priceless so I watched it. When the credits began to roll, I thought, "Wow. This shouldn't be considered comedy at all." I did not laugh once anywhere throughout this movie. I strongly suggest NOT seeing it.

    Light Hearted Joking

There is reference to oral sex, blood gusing that is light reed and obviosly fake. Young children will not get the humor and it is appropriate for ages 11 and over.

My Favorite Movie of All Time

This movie has got to be my all time favorite movie, it is hilarious, absurd, and it is just downright a classic, its got the best ending in history besides city lights and the sting. not everyone will like the humor, but just thinking about the movie is making me want to watch it and crack up laughing, so that's what i'm gonna go do right now.

    Classic Comedy

Yeah some people don't get it and think it is stupid, but it is a hilarious movie. I recently watched it with my soon to be 11 year old son and his friend and they thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. The only iffy part is the scene with the virgins and the request for oral sex. The violence is comedic and laughable. Great for those soon to be teenagers that are growing out of the cartoon movies

    Too funny.

Definitely THE funniest movie ever made. There was not a single moment that I didn't laugh. I recommend anyone that likes a good "ha ha" to go rent this movie. Worth the time, most definitely.

monty python has done it this time!!!

I love this movie, espically when the "french" soilders fling cows, goats, ducks, and a strange "trojan bunny." The knights of the round table dancing is GREAT, and there's no drinking involved (I know this because I'm watching it right now!!!)I almost cried when the evil killer bunny attacked the knights; how could something so CUTE be sooo evil?!?! The evil bunny has some blood in it, and they throw a bomb at it, but it's just stupid comedy... but in a good way! The black knight is funny, even though there is some blood, but it looks like orange juice. The knights of NI is just plain funny; they force people to do what they say by torturing them with NI, they also think shrubberies are really hard to find(lol!!!).If someone says this movie's bad, DON'T BELIEVE THEM!!!!!!! This movie's great! and it's all fake, so...........WATCH IT!!!!!!!!!*NI!*

Definately the best comedy I've seen, and probably that I'll ever see

(I am 13, whatever it says on my name) This movie had me laughing almost constantly. A GREAT british comedy, almost as good as Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the book, see the review). It is so incredibly random, I don't know how they came up with it. Absolutely wonderful, just some extremely animated blood and language.

Amazing movie; laugh out loud hilarious!

I just saw this movie for the first time last summer, and it had me from hello! It's now among my top favorites and is very frequently watched at my house. My dad has been a fan since college, and we can finally recite nearly every line from the whole film together now. Hahah... This is one of those movies that you will either love or hate. Some people think it's hilarious and others think it's rediculous. Either way, I highly reccommend you check it out! There is only one real sexual scene; at castle Anthrax with Sir Gallahad and the castle maidens. The words sh-t and b-stard are used once or twice. There is also some blood and some (humorous) fighting, but any blood you see is very fake-looking, thick, and red-orange in color. Most of the violence (EX: the "killer rabbit, xD) is meant to be laughed at, and not to be taken seriously; as is most of the movie.
