Tedious slasher flick is both gory and boring.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 15–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Some discussion of class; a rival for prom queen notes that "I just want Crissy to know she can't buy everything." Crissy is also referred to as a "rich bitch." And then there are all the killings...
  • Violence:

A total of 13 murders, mostly committed with a knife (although there are some stranglings and a shooting as well, plus scuffling, someone's face getting smashed into a mirror, and kicks to the face). Many of the murders occur off screen, and viewers never see a knife cutting or stabbing into flesh, but there's plenty of spurting blood and shots of bloody murder weapons. Several corpses with visible bloody stab wounds or lying in pools of blood are shown.
  • Sex:

Cleavage discussed and on display; characters talk about "alone time," "looking sexy," and "getting laid." The protagonist's stalker is clearly motivated by romantic/sexual pathology. A group of older men invite female teens up to their hotel rooms; the young women laugh it off. On-screen sexuality is limited to light making out in the context of committed relationships.
  • Language:

Language includes "goddamn," "s--t," "damn," "hell," and "bitch."
  • Consumerism:

Only one logo visible -- Jones Soda -- although one character offers another "a Midol" for cramps.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

A group of teens hoists a beer keg into the hotel; another underage attendee is busted trying to smuggle a bottle into the prom. A third character pours alcohol from a flask into his soda. The lead character has been taking Klonpin for anxiety, but at the start of the film has not been taking it for a week: "I don't want to feel numb ... I should be a little bit nervous on prom night, right?" Later, she does take one, albeit with good reason.

What Parents Need to Know

About Prom Night (2008)

Parents need to know that this violent (yet curiously dull) slasher-style teen horror film -- which is a loose remake of the identically named 1980 Jamie Lee Curtis movie -- includes a constant stream of stabbings, stranglings, and other murders, all of which are committed without craft, tension, or any subtlety whatsoever. It's just a string of killings and gory bloodshed. There's also some discussion of sex and sexuality, references to underage drinking, and strong language ("s--t").

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the appeal of horror films. How would you describe the experience of watching them? Why do they so often put young women in peril? Families can also discuss the difference between shock and suspense and the difference between violence and tension. Main character Donna is dealing with a clear case of post-traumatic stress syndrome; families can talk about trying to recover from tragedy and violence.

    Not to good.

This movie kind of sucked. Wasn't to good and very predictable. It barely shows any blood or gore, and is a movie to skip.

This movie is not as boring as everyone says, it actually wasnt that bad. (Although Many People Die )A lot of the violence is offscreen (to get a PG-13), and theres not really any blood. There is a makeout scene (ended quickly) and talks about sex and body parts. There is minor language (nothing u couldnt hear in a PG). There is some drinking. But thats about it. I did think it was an entertaining movie tho

    Okay

This movie was okay, kind of boring but not as bad as some people say. I never saw the older version, but it was okay. Hated the ending though, except for the death

The Film Doesn't Have Much to Offer

This remake features no connection to the original slasher classic, and is a disgrace to the slasher genre. There is very little suspense in the film, and the violence is minimal. There is no secret to who the killer is. There is no reason to see this movie.

So Fake, any tween, could see it!

OK over all this was a pretty good movie, i didn't enjoy the beginning when you watched the mom die, it was the worst part, but otherwise this movie was fine. Sure it had LOTS of blood, but it all looked so fake that ketchup would have looked more real. THIS WASN"T SCARY! my friend is afraid of everything, even action stupid films like twlight, so if your like her don't see it, and little kids might get scared, but most likely not! I wasn't at all! I love horror films, but this shouldn't be qualified as horror, you didn't see the people get murdered, or any real looking blood, you saw the dead bodies after, for like 1/2 of a second, but even that wasn't that bad because it looked so fake. honestly it wasn't scary AT ALL!

NoT ThE BeSt HoRrOr MoViE I'vE SeEn

There are many better scary movies out there but Prom NIght is a classic tale about a stalker. There are alot of killings, but most of them are shown offscreen, there is alot of feminine peril.

How did this movie make money?

A pointless movie, just outright violence and terror. Poorly done, something you might see in a Lifetime movie, unrealistic, and to top it off the worst ending to a movie I've ever seen.

    boring

Not a good movie. Not that it was scary it was just dumb. no supsense no plot no imagnation. skip it if you can. I just walked out of the theatere because of bordom and bought two tickets to superhero movie. That's how bad it was. It didnt scare my girl friend (She hated it) so we got bored. When we got to her house we were telling her dad (he hates me) how much we hated it and he just said " I feel the same way about you" and I was uesd to it so I didnt really care. what I am trying to say is dont see this movie. I found it boring and bad for the littles. So till next time bye.

    I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all one star? This movie was awesome!!! Scary? You've got to be kidding me. Me and 11 other girls ages 11 and 12 watched this at midnight with the light off and no adults in the room. Gory? A little bit you see a lot of blood and you see him killing the people but never actually see the knife going into the body. I have a friend that was scared of The Last Mimsy but not afraid of this. If you however are easily depressed dont see it the people that are killed have strong relationships and futures ahead of them when they die. One more thing i have to tell you the joke we pulled on my friend after the movie. She fell asleep so we left a message on her phone that says this: Emily Allison's acting kinda weird, she has this knife and... no allison what are you doing?... wait.. no... stop!!...(choking noise.) When Emily was about to wake up we put food die on our necks and Allison hid in the closet. When she woke up she screamed! (The parents were in on it) and said where's Allison then Allison came out of the closet with a knife with the scariest look ever on her face!!! We all started laughing super hard!!!! Once again... see this movie!!!

    I jumped

The first time I saw this movie, I was with my guy friend, and I only jumped 4 times because of the movie. My friend Drew and I both jump everytime at tthe part where te piggons come and fly over Lisa. I cry every time the ronnie throws the ring on the bed after Lisa runs out to find Donna. I didn't think the movie was all that scary with my guy frinds Shayne and Tyler, but then the 5 girls and 1 guy last night was a lot scarier. If it doen't scare you like it did some people, i was kinda dull, but it did have a great story line. I would say it is a great thriller, and suspencefull.

This movie is one that is very well done. If you get scared easily this movie is not for you. It follows the life of Donna(Played by Brittany Snow) who's parents were murdered after a psycho school teacher becomes obsessed with her. He is put in prison for life in a mximum security prison. He escapes and comes to Donna' prom and starts a murdering rampage. It's a movie worth seeing.

    Okay

Well, im 12/13 and I thought this movie wasn't scary at all and I get scared easily. The language was just the regular words that are said in PG-13 movies S--t, damn, hell nothing to bad the make out sceane was only about 5 seconds. The commercials to this movie make it seem innapropriate and scary but its not. I would say this movie would be okay for a mature 11 year old and up.
