Common Sense Note

The stories on this DVD are based on popular children's books. Some are animated in the style of the book's original illustrations, some are live-action. They offer an opportunity for families to discuss the differences between reading a book and watching a filmed version of the same story -- are the voices the way you expected them to sound? What do you think the filmmakers changed from the printed book? The stories are all very sweet and humorous, with only the slightest hints of trouble -- Angus the Scottie gets lost, for example, and has to sleep outside in the rain, but by the end he finds his way home. Families without dogs should be forewarned: watching these stories will make your children want a dog of their own!

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Sarah Wenk

This is a lovely disc, perfect for watching with your children or for letting them watch alone when you need to keep them occupied. The six stories are based on children's books, and tell sweet and charming stories of dogs and their families. Four of the tales are animated, two are live action, without narration.

For the stories with words, there is a "Read Along" option that allows you to display subtitles, which can help children learn to read. The tales range from the silly -- George can't bark because he has managed to ingest a menagerie of other animals -- to the more serious -- Dot the Fire Dog helps to save an old man and a tiny kitten from a burning building. Compared to many animated offerings for children, the pace is slow and gentle. Whether or not you own the books on which these films are based, you and your children will enjoy the antics of these adorable canines.
