Why We Rated This on for Ages 16 and Up

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Daniel, the designated "capitalist," is a greedy, calculating man whose disdain for others only grows more pronounced as the film proceeds; the "man of god" is also conniving and power-mad; at last, Daniel's son breaks away, though he does so by competing with his father in business, exactly what his father hates most.
  • Violence:

Early on, Daniel is injured in a mining accident (his leg is pierced by a tool, and there's some blood). Several oil drilling accidents, a couple with explosions and flames; two accidents kill workers (brief explosions, bodies shown) and one injures a young boy (his body is slammed and unconscious, and he's left deaf). An angry Daniel slaps and hits H.W. Eli attacks his father, trying to strangle him. Daniel attacks Eli, kicking and hitting him, dragging him into an oil pool. Murder committed by gunfire (no blood visible). Eli slaps Daniel hard and repeatedly during a baptism. A brutal, bloody murder is committed at the film's end.
  • Sex:

Daniel and Henry visit a brothel -- kissing couples appear in the background.
  • Language:

Language includes "hell," "damn," and "ass."
  • Consumerism:

Some thematic commercialism -- the film follows the building of an oil empire.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Daniel quiets infant H.W. by pouring whiskey into his bottle and, years later, gives him whiskey to make him sleep. Daniel drinks repeatedly, several times to the point of passing out; Henry drinks a few times as well. Daniel smokes cigarettes and a pipe, as do his right-hand man and several background characters.

What Parents Need to Know

About There Will Be Blood

Parents need to know that most teens probably won't be clamoring to see this slow-moving, somber drama about mature, sometimes abstract themes like capitalism and religion as driving forces in 19th- and early 20th-century America. Violence includes mining and oil well accidents (explosions, flames, a couple of deaths), several fights (hitting and kicking), and a shooting (abrupt and disturbing). The blood referenced in the title comes at the end of the movie, during a protracted, brutal struggle. Some drinking and smoking; language includes "hell" and damn."

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the movie's messages. Is there a clearly defined "good guy" or "bad guy"? Do characters that offer a mix of both qualities more accurately reflect real life? If so, why do you think TV shows and movies don't feature characters like that more often? How are Daniel and Eli both alike and at odds?

    My concerns are:
    • Excessive violence

Lon complecated story for older teens to understand but it should easily be rated pg-13 maybe even pg without a person dieing into the hole of oil

    Fantastic for mature tweens^

A great movie about the life of a horrible man. If you are mature enough to be engaged by the film, you can see it.

Quite Possibly The Greatest Movie Ever!

Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia) directs this epic American movie about a man named Daniel Plainview, played by Daniel Day Lewis in probably the greatest acting performance ever given. Plainview is an oil man who goes out to seek land to buy, and to drill on. He is told about land that has oil. So he goes out to the land and thats when he meets Eli, played by Paul Dano. Right when he meets Eli thats when the mental battle begins. There Will Be Blood is a great movie about greed, religion, vengence, and alchoholism. There Will Be Greed. There Will Be Vengence. There Will Be Blood. P.S. I... Drink... Your... MILKSHAKE!!! SLURP! I DRINK IT UP!!!

    An Epic American Classic.

Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest. There Will Be Blood will go down in history as an epic American classic. The film is both relevant and mature.

There Will be Blood is brilliant!

Based on the Upton Sinclair novel Oil! this american film is surely to become a classic. The flawless Daniel Day Lewis gives his 2nd Oscar winning performance as Daniel Plainview. Unfortunetely the movie itself was beat out by best picture winner No Country for Old Men. This movie is hardly a rated R and it only carries a rating for some violence. I think anyone who loves great acting and great movies should rent this!

    Don't waste your time!

This movie's violence was too much and it was very boring. I got up to go to the bathroom about 20 times trying to escape the theater. I would not see this again if someone paid ME to see it. Hated it.

Doesn't Really Deserve the R-Rating, But It's Still A Brilliant Film

I honestly think There Will Be Blood should've been rated PG-13. There isn't really that much graphic violence in it, due to some swift editing. There is blood and violence, but 14 year old teens and up shouldn't have a problem with it. This isn't a movie for everybody though. It requires patience and close attention to detail, and I believe most 14 year olds will lose interest after the first 15 minutes. I, on the other hand, thought it was a brilliant film. I will keep this review short, but I must say one thing. Daniel Day-Lewis brings his A+ game to this film.

    A Good, Interesting Plot

This is a good movie to watch, but its length may bore you a tad. This movie is ridiculously rated higher than it should be, and could easily pass for a PG. The oil well catching on fire could be frightening, but not graphic. Recommended for kids 11 and up.

    Day-Lewis stuns again

First of all, I will begin this review by NOT attacking the other reviewers. I'm a drama geek. I'm a theatre nerd. However you describe it, that's me. TWBB is a movie about obsession and (most importantly) the defamation of character. It certainly deserved the awards it received for it's stunning cinematography and excellent acting. The screenplay was well written and the open ending is thought provoking. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

    This is for you Stanley

For this review, instead of restating others opinions, Im countering 12 year old Stanley (I doubt he reads this). Dear Stanley, you are exactly what you think you are not. An immature child too young to understand anything that is deep and meaningful. The acting is some of the greatest of our time. Daniel Day Lewis is my idol. His performance made me cry. His character choices were subtle, believable, and he kept his limp throughout the movie. He made me feel anxious and if you think he was "over the top" you are an idiot. Kudos to the actor playing Eli as well. The writing was brilliant. The "I drink your milkshake" was a creative metaphor which you clearly couldn't grasp. The writing couldn't have been better. YOU are the one suffering brain damage for attempting to talk badly of something you know nothing about. Im sorry if the script wasnt cheesy enough and didnt contain the words 'doodie' throughout. Because that seems to be your view on perfect writing. Albeit I did find it a bit slow moving, the perfect acing made it all worthwhile. Daniel is up there with the acting gods of the likes of Marlin Brando and Julie Andrews. Stop watching these movies, Stanley, if your going to criticize it in areas it truly shows no signs of defect. The soundtrack was original and innovative. Go back to watching mindless hollywood flicks that all contain the same ideas and content (you know the kind, "guy gets girl, saves the world, learns a lesson") and shut up about this gem. THe story of a true villian.

    An awesome movie

This movie is okay for kids my age if they are mature enough to not laugh at some serious parts. The part where Eli "cures" the woman of arthritis would be funny if you didn't look at it maturely. I agree that this movie is one of the greatest. I gave it four stars because of the extremely unfitting music(it plays a symphony after **SPOILER**Daniel kills Eli**END SPOILER**) THe violence was a partial issue, expected amount of language(it is after all about an oil buisiness), no sex, the message: greed and money can do wonders to a person. In this movie money does NOT cause happiness. This movie is awesome, hands-down.

I left feeling somewhat sick and disappointed

I guess with this type of movie I was hoping for a little more than what was given. The story line wasn't that great I thought, unless that was part of the depiction the director was going for. I felt as if I wasted my time going to watch this movie. Maybe you might enjoy it?

    THIS WON OSCARS?! WHAT?!

**note: this review contains spoilers** OK, you guys can say I'm "too young to understand the brillance of this film", or you can say "I should go back to watching Uwe Boll movies" (I hate Uwe Boll btw), because I don't care. I understand everything this movie was trying to say, and I understood every single word uttered from every character's mouth. The truth is...I think this movie was a piece of flaming dog feces. Not only did it unnecesarily drag on and On and ON, but the acting was way over-the-top (especially "Oscar-worthy" (?) Daniel Day-Lewis) and the script was really REALLY bad. Whoever thought up "My milkshake drinks your milkshake" must suffer some brain damage. And the ending...that was just icing on the horrible tasting cake. Daniel goes crazy and commits murder, and then suddenly realizes he's screwed. I guess Paul Thomas Anderson, the true "genius" that he is, couldn't think of a better ending, so he just cut to black and made up some phony story about how the ending was supposed to be thought-provoking. Go ahead guys, flame me all ya want, I just think that if this was the second best movie of the year, then 2007 was a really sad year for movies. Why can't the Academy EVER give the Best Picture Oscar to a movie truly worthy of it, like this year's Charlie Wilson's War, or the sorely unappreciated Walk the Line?

    Bad movie but very appropriate.

This film is very slow but really has not enough violence really to make it R.There are only 4 deaths and 2 of which are accidents and accidents happen. This didn't send a good message but not really a bad one either.
