What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this movie includes violence that ends in the death of two innocent characters, injury to others, and the destruction of people's homes. In one scene, a character, who has just physically assaulted a woman, seems on the brink of raping her when he is interrupted. Some characters also slap each other and use insulting names.

  • Honor to one's community, loyalty to one's friends, standing up for the defenseless. However, this message gets overshadowed by other bad behavior and events.
  • A villain shoots and kills a beloved character. His death occurs offscreen, and the next scene is his funeral. When the main character is a little boy, his father dies (offscreen) in a fire set by villains. Some characters harshly slap each other in anger or frustration, sometimes leaving visible red marks. Serious cartoon violence with gunplay, sword fighting, and whip wielding, as well as scenes where soldiers burn down people's homes. A character, who has just physically assaulted a woman, seems on the brink of raping her when he is interrupted.
  • A male character tries to force himself on a female character in two separate scenes. When she resists his advances, he violently slaps her across the room. In one scene, he looms over her bed as if he is going to rape her.
  • Characters continually call each other insulting names, such as "moron," "idiot," and "loser."
  • Not applicable.
  • Several characters are shown drinking wine or brandy. One character in a position of authority gets so drunk that he unwittingly signs a document sanctioning brutality against his citizens. A character is asked about his family's tobacco fields, and he replies that tobacco is unhealthy so his family now harvests corn.

What's the story?

Set in Spain, THE ADVENTURES OF BANDOLERO opens in a small village controlled and terrorized by the governor and his henchman, Captain Rodrigo, who burns down several homes, including that of a young boy whose father is killed in the fire. The boy grows up to be Bandolero, a swashbuckling vigilante who protects the citizens and, a la Robin Hood, steals from the rich to give to the poor. Bandolero is aided by a trio of friends, and loved by the inexplicably blue-haired Maria, the governor's daughter.

Is it any good?

Unfortunately, the violence seems pretty intense for a children's cartoon and has many scenes that may disturb younger children. On a less-serious note, some suspenseful scenes merely seem implausible, and the dialogue veers between archaically stilted to fairly ridiculous to strangely contemporary. The villains, meanwhile, are always laughing that stereotypical, crazy villains' laugh. All of this is likely to leave older kids unimpressed.

Overall, Bandolero has an almost sneering feel; even some of the "good" characters -- including the hero's canine sidekick -- aren't especially likeable and actually seem irritable. In fairness, perhaps something was lost in translation, as this movie was originally produced in Spain and appears to be dubbed in English. Although Bandolero and his gang are bound to triumph in the end, the journey there is, frankly, a little exhausting.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about why someone like Bandolero is so desperately needed in this town. They can also talk about their favorite heroes and their attributes. Are they sword-wielding? Cunning and brave? True underdogs?

This movie is very bad. The good messages it might have are overshadowed by all the violence. Which by the way, there is a lot of. Insults are often used. A character tries to force himself on a female character. Characters drink. Not a good movie for anyone!
