Parents need to know that there's nothing to worry about here. Life in Mouseland is quite orderly and calm. Angelina loves nothing more than dancing, which dictates the plot of the segments in the movie. Children in the movie learn to solve problems with the help of adults.
Angelina Ballerina is back for more leaps and twirls in this feature-length movie comprised of five segments. Angelina (voiced by Charlotte Spencer) begins the school year as a new student at Camembert Academy, where she befriends some kids from different backgrounds and discovers new dance influences. She stumbles a bit as she tries to fit in, but she ultimately learns to stay true to herself. She also learns lessons of grace and courtesy when her dance partner is ill, and she learns to accept different points of view when she is paired with a boy who specializes in hip-hop dancing.
Based on the books by Helen Craig and Katharine Holabird, and following the successful series on PBS Sprout, ANGELINA BALLERINA: LOVE TO DANCE is a fluid and entertaining movie for tiny dancers. Though viewers who are not familiar with terms like "arabesque" and "pas-de-deux" might find Angelina's interest in dance more of an obsession than a hobby, young ballerinas will adore watching the moves come to life on the screen.
The educational components embedded in the movie might give young viewers a leg up on dance class. And it's easy to love a group of enthusiastic mouselings who get excited about dance practice, recitals, and music. Boy mouselings get into the act too, unafraid to show off their ballet skills. Throw in a few Pre-K appropriate lessons about honesty and problem solving, and you have a mousterpiece.
Families can talk about how Angelina daydreams about being showered with applause after a dance performance. Do you have daydreams like this? Do you think Angelina is putting too much pressure on herself to be perfect? What happens when she makes a dance-related mistake?
