As I had noted in previous reviews of Sandler films, I used to not want to like him, but gave in to his genuine charm and likable nature which translates well on screen. That being said, this film is only "fair" with a bit too much of those adult themed jokes to be quite for young kids and too much for kids to be for adults who don't embrace their "childlike" side. It starts out with a feeling kind of like "The Princess Bride," in the "storytelling," but it moves into a rather tepid tale about the power of dreams and believing. Sandler plays his usual lovable, misunderstood character whose heart is always in the right place. You've seen it before and now, if you watch this, you will see it with Sandler and a PG rating. A cute watch. I wouldn't recommend it for kids under 7 or 8 frankly if not older. Some nice zingers, some pretty faces and some nice sight gags earns this little more than a three-star review...we will see about the sequel.
This movie was just really bad. it was dumb and the the script is terrible! Im a HUGE fan of Adam Sandler but this just dosent cut it. I think he could do kids movies but NOT a Disney movie where the people rush the movie and write it so bad thinking that since it's for kids that they wont care.
I was very upset to see that this movie had women dressed inappropriately - in bikinis - and the language was often crass. I feel that Disney is showing that what they really care about are catering to a large audience so that they can bring in more money. The concern to create movies that can be modest, clean, and funny at the same time is not as important to them as making a blockbuster movie that all ages will view. The concept of this movie could have been so magical and did not need extra "grown up" components in order for it to be interesting, entertaining, creative, and kid-friendly.
To be honest, as far as concerns go, the official review on this site is pretty accurate. My husband and I wanted to see it, and after seeing a preview with the raining gumballs, so did my son. After checking here, I decided we would give it a shot. I thought he was bored watching it (and I thought it was reasonable a 5 year old would be a little bored), but he has watched it several more times since, and seems to be enjoying it more each time! I think all three of us enjoyed it more than we expected to.
Oh, my husband and I were a little put off by the gluten-free cake jokes at the beginning, because my son can't eat gluten and has several serious allergies. But because of all the weird wheat-grass nonsense thrown in, we were able to play it off to him as the mom is just a bad cook with bad taste.
I went to see this with my husband and NO kids! And, we weren't the only ones in the theater without children either. We loved it! Typical Adam Sandler comedy, (my husband compared it to Happy Gilmore and Mr. Deeds), but still different in it's own right. I would recommend it to everyone; young and old, and say that Mr. Sandler can still be very funny! In a world where there are so many depressing news stories, and even movies, this is a breath of fresh air!
Great escape from the everyday life stuff!
the movie was fine for my 7 year old daughter but i had to talk with her afterward about a few scenes - such as... the old girlfriend of Sandler's that is overweight and her gluttony is supposed to be funny
A sweet movie. I normally don't like Sandler's juvenile frat-boy humor but was impressed with this film. Mild language and adult behavior but much of it in the fantasy realm of the bedtime stories. My kids really liked the way the movie twisted the plot points in the stories in unexpected ways in "real" life. Some of the twists might be a little hard for younger ones to follow, but the fantasy elements are humorous enough to keep their attention. While Sandler's character is flawed, in the end he does the right thing to take care of his family even though it seems to be to his own detriment.
My five year old really got into this movie, and I was so happy to find a movie that he could watch that he wasn't afraid of! Almost nothing scary at all! (Athough he was scared that he would really catch on fire at the end)
We loved this movie! I was concerned because Sandler is not usually family-friendly. But we were all laughing and enjoying the story to the very end. My kids are 10 and 14. My wife doesn't care for "silly" movies but she loved this one!
p.s. My TVGuardian took out one character's name but I think it was 'butt'.
No one has mentioned this and I have to say that I was upset to find out that this movie has a couple of scenes where women were in bikinis and one with the main character in a bikini and you could tell she had implants. Did “Walt Disney” seriously make this movie? I can expect this from Adam Sandler but not to have a Disney seal of approval. I am disappointed that now we have to screen even Disney movies!!
I really enjoyed this movie!!!! It was fun and funny. There was some language such as people taking God's Name in vein. The story is very interesting and sweet. This is most certainly in my favorite top 20 movies!!!!
My 3 1/2 year old was bored (no surprise). My 7 and 9 year olds liked it well enough. Their favorite parts were whenever the guinea pig with the large eyes appeared. The premise of the movie--the bedtime stories come true in real life the next day--could have resulted in a truly memorable movie. With Sandler at the helm, though, the movie turned into a predictable and uninspired (and overly long) two hours.
What I did not like: I do not like movies that make fun of fat people, as this movie does. Conversely, I do not like children's movies that praise women for being thin, as this movie also does. And--ironically enough--the movie is also filled with bashing of healthy eating choices. Apparently, Cinnabon and marshmallows are what kids really want and only uptight parents withhold. I can take one or two jokes about this--the opening part about the wheatgrass birthday cake was funny--but it went on throughout the whole movie. Give it a rest already.
Cute flick with nothing negative for kids 6 and up. Liked message about following your dreams and not letting obstacles get in the way. My kids really enjoyed it.
