I remembered this as an adorable family film from my childhood. So when my husband rented it for my daughters, ages 4 and 9, I thought we'd have a fun movie night. Instead I wound up comforting two screaming, crying girls who kept asking me why we rented "the worst movie ever." They loved the dogs, but the kidnapping of the gagged children by a mean man with a gun who kicks Benji's girlfriend dog (seemingly to death) was extremely upsetting for them. We watched till the end so they could see that she had only suffered a broken leg. But they were still crying and had trouble sleeping afterward. Sigh.
My 5 year old is pretty sensitive kid, and we were caught off-guard when there was a real gun firing, when the children were kidnapped (and gagged), and when Benji's little sweetheart dog was kicked by a grown-up. Of course, my memories of it as a child were pretty benign, but found it jolting to watch it with my little one. We're still stuck on Sound of Music and Singin' in the Rain...
We watched this movie @ school, and it was good ,,,UNTIL the girlfriend dog gets kicked. We did not get to watch the end, so everybody thought the girlfriend dog died. Over all it was very cute. :)
