What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this sequel to Disney's hit Camp Rock is bound to be another must-see for tweens, thanks largely to stars Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers. Just like the original, Camp Rock 2 boasts plenty of fun song-and-dance numbers and lots of positive messages about being true to yourself, staying loyal to your ideals, and valuing friendship. Disney’s ultra-clean take on teen life might garner some eye rolling from older tweens, but younger ones will enjoy the story, and they’ll come away from it with a positive and inspiring view of self-expression.

  • Nothing educational per se, but there are lots of positive take-away messages about self-esteem and friendship.
  • Strong positive messages about loyalty, friendship, individuality, and being happy with who you are.
  • The characters are a pretty well-behaved bunch, so little more than the occasional well-meaning prank takes place. Tess puts her own selfish aspirations over her friends’ feelings but pays the price in the end. Axel uses bribery and his own fame to sabotage the success of Camp Rock, but his victory is short-lived when the campers realize his true character. The cast is very diverse.
  • Not applicable.
  • A developing relationship between teens makes for plenty of longing glances, some hand-holding, and one long-awaited kiss.
  • A couple uses of “butt.”
  • The movie is part of a huge marketing campaign, with lots of product tie-ins.

What's the story?

School’s out, and the Camp Rockers are headed back to their summer oasis for more music and fun. But an unexpected sight awaits them there: A rival group -- Camp Star -- has set up shop across the lake. Led by Camp Rock founder Brown Cesario’s (Daniel Fathers) former bandmate Axel Turner (Daniel Kash), Camp Star takes a more cutthroat approach to fostering musical talent -- but its glitz and glam woo some defectors and threaten Camp Rock’s existence. Mitchie (Demi Lovato) and Shane (Joe Jonas) had hoped that summer camp would give them a chance to deepen their relationship, but now it’s up to them to pull together a performance that will save the camp itself.

Is it any good?

By now most tweens are very familiar with the style of Disney’s music-infused movies and shows, so the fact that CAMP ROCK 2: THE FINAL JAM devotes so much of its time to breakout song-and-dance numbers won’t come as a surprise. The good news is that the talented star pool (in addition to Lovato, all three of the Jonas Brothers join in) is skilled enough to ensure that the many musical interruptions actually enhance the plot rather than disrupt it. The bad news is that the sheer number of the tunes (14 in all) gives jaded viewers (namely, parents) the impression that the movie is doubling as a commercial for the soundtrack CD.

But tweens will be thrilled to see their favorite stars reprising their roles in this fun sequel, which, like the original, is filled with positive messages about loyalty, self-expression, and sticking to your values. Mitchie and Shane’s relationship evolves slowly, culminating in one kiss, and Nate (Nick Jonas) dabbles in love with a rival rocker, but that’s the extent of the "racy" content. Disney tradition dictates that the movie is devoid of anything truly iffy, so parents can feel safe in giving tweens the go-ahead.

Very Disappointing
I have to say, Camp Rock 2 is very disappointing. I am a massive fan of the first Camp Rock and I was really looking forward to seeing the sequel, but it was just plain boring. The music was really bad and most of the acting was bad. I would not recommend watching Camp Rock 2.

Really dont like it.
I really didn't like the movie. Mitchie started acting all bossy and a little bratty in the movie, and during training for the final performance. She could have made it easier for them, and they wanted to have fun. She seemed to care much more about saving camp than interactng with shane. I felt really sorry for him. Mitchie could have acted like a better friend. She also started telling everyone to get to work, like she was the boss of everyone. She and shane were basically the stars of EVERY performance in the film. I would have appreciated more of Ella, Peggy, even Tess. Nick's relationship with Dana in the film is quite odd. Nick is obviously trying to tell her that he really likes her, but she doesn't seem to get it. The songs like Fire, Can't Back Down, Heart and Soul, Tear it Down, I really liked. Well done. But the songs like Introducing Me, Brand new day, I wouldn't change a thing, just get on my nerves. Poor. Also, this is our song, was very great. I LOVED the first movie. Loved it. All the songs, the story, perfection. Give it 5 stars. This one, poor, tacky job. It's only Mitchies second year there, but she already acts like she knows everything about it. And how did she and shane suddenly become so close! I was really looking forward to the movie, but I was really disapointed. I hated the second one, loved the first one.

Its a MOVIE not a song.
I only saw this movie because my nanny or babysitter or whatever you want to call her likes disney channel and felt a burning desire to watch this piece of garbage. Its one of the better music videos Ive ever seen, but ONLY that. In other words, there is about a 2 to 1 ratio of song to movie. And its ridiculous.

Great sequel!
SO much better than the first! I loved every second of it! The songs were better, the dancing was phenomenal, and the storyline was actually a lot more focused. Overall very well made.
