What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this action-comedy sequel includes a good bit of goofy cat-and-dog humor and physical comedy that's OK for elementary schoolers but may not be age-appropriate for preschoolers. Overall, most of the jokes and sight gags are rather tame, although there are quite a few product placements, some use of language like "butt" and "stupid," and a long pet prison sequence that features a cat that sounds and acts like Hannibal Lecter. Of course, most children won't understand the reference, but Mr. Tinkles is still one creepy cat. Note: Since 3-D technology intensifies scenes, it's possible that young kids unfamiliar with the format may be jumpy during the action sequences.

Educational value: The way the cats and dogs put aside their hostility to work together is a good lesson for children.
Positive messages: The movie's main message is that if you look beyond the label "enemy," you could find a friend, a partner, a person who can help you. That's what the cats and dogs do, and they manage to defeat an evil cat in the process.
Positive role models: Diggs is impetuous, but he always means well in the end. Catherine overcomes her fear of water to help get her and Diggs out of a dangerous situation. Butch realizes he was wrong to dump Diggs as a partner.
Violence & scariness: Kitty Galore is an evil mastermind who plans to destroy all dogs in her plan for world domination. She almost succeeds in having Diggs and Catherine killed. There's an explosion and a couple of near disasters, but there are more threats of violence than actual violent scenes. There are also several scenes in which animals do stunts and escape from scrapes a la James Bond.
Sexy stuff: Diggs flirts with female dogs (Afghans) -- i.e. "Helloooo, ladies!" Another character is taunted with "who's your daddy?"
Language: Some uses of "butt," "crazy," "stupid," and the like.
Consumerism: Several brands are mentioned or shown, including iMac, Petco, HBO, Google, and Dr. Phil.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: There's an extended gag about cats who've consumed too much catnip (think "pothead" stereotypes/jokes with cats); Mr. Tinkles is shown having a tropical drink on a beach.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about why it's important that the cats and dogs get over their differences to work together. Can you think of a similar real-life situation? Is it dangerous to make assumptions about people?
  • Who do the movie's jokes appeal to most? Do you think kids get all the pop culture references? Are they funny for adults?
  • Some people love talking-animal movies, and other people hate them. What do you think?

What's the story?

What's the story?
In this not-exactly-long-awaited sequel to 2001's Cats & Dogs, the nefarious cat Kitty Galore (voiced by Bette Midler) masterminds a plan to make the entire canine population of the world go mad so that she and her feline followers can enslave humans. It's an ambitious scheme, especially since an elite, top-secret organization of dogs, DOGS -- led by distinguished beagle Lou (Neil Patrick Harris) -- is out to stop her. Australian Shepherd Butch (Nick Nolte), a veteran investigator, is tapped to break in rookie partner Diggs (James Marsden), who's recruited after being let go from the San Francisco Police Department's K-9 unit. When the DOGS agents realize that catching Kitty requires some insider knowledge, they team up with their mortal enemies -- Catherine (Christina Applegate) and other agents in the MEOWS squad -- to bring down the crazy cat.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

In this day of ubiquitous, unnecessary 3-D films, CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE is yet another example of why there's no need to make every kid-marketed film come with a $4 surcharge and oversized glasses. Although there are a few laughs in the movie, there's also a whole lot of eye-rolling for parents. What works best in the plot is the buddy-cop angle with Nolte and Marsden's canines. There's an obvious 48 Hours/Lethal Weapon vibe between the two dogs -- one is a wise veteran and the other an immature hotheaded newbie -- and the rapport feels genuine (albeit ridiculously familiar). And the dog and cat agent headquarters are amusing, but the overlong gags about a cat lady's brood that's "high" on catnip and the Hannibal Lecter-esque Mr. Tinkles get old alarmingly fast.

Midler is evilly delicious as the megalomaniacal Kitty Galore, although it's a bit disappointing that she didn't contribute anything to the soundtrack, which does feature a fantastically campy rendition of "Get the Party Started" by Shirley Bassey. Kids who have yet to outgrow the allure of every single talking-animal comedy will enjoy the silly jokes, but grown-ups may find the CGI and the animal lip movements a tad off-putting after a while -- not to mention the stale one-liners.

Pretty mundane for an adult, and would be embarrassing to an adolescent. My 4 year old daughter found the explosions scary, a little uneased by most scenes with Kitty Galore and the Hannibal Lecter/Mr Tinkles scene in Alcatraz a little upsetting. She enjoyed it overall - leaving the theater very upbeat - but I think if she'd been a year or so older it would have been fine.

Put it on the Netflix list for the kids
I watched it with my son and his friend. The whole movie is based around talking animals. How more unbelievable can you get. But over we liked it. Yea its cheesy, but if it can keep my sons attention it cant be all bad.

I thought this movie was somewhere between merely okay and good. It may not be the best, but I still enjoyed it. I thought that you could describe it as cute with a good story. Though it was not very funny, if you go and just see the movie for the kind of adventure it is, and not have it in your mind that it needs to be critiqued, it is good.

Best in kids' movies today
This is a wonderful family movie for all ages! In fact, it's one of the few modern kids' movies that have no sexual problems. I watched it with a few kids I was babysitting, and we all loved it. Granted, it may seem boring to teenagers, but for kids and even tweens, this is THE movie for family movie night!

Good movie
I took my 5 and 7 year old boys to see this movie. I laughed and even though there is a few minor indiscretions, nothing is implied sexually. It was a laugh for all of us. It held my attention with all the referances and held the boys attention with all the action. The movie has a positve message about people of different origins (in this case, cats and dogs) working together to accomplish a goal. It was great for all us.

In my opinion Cats and Dogs was a better movie. The evil cat was hairless and freaky in an ugly way. A few funny moments but overall there is nothing that was very interesting.

Big theme is betrayal. And there is some action violence. And I personally think that you guys were too rough on this. It was very good. It ha really funny slapstick humor.

No offence but what a sad excuse for a sequel! Previous cats and dogs (which we ALL forgot) was much better

Not my type
This movie was not good I am 14 and I watched it and it was terrible. This movie is the only movie currently that made me want to leave. This should be for younger kids. I do not recommend this for older kids, as it gets really boring after a while.

Okay
I had to watch it with littler kids, and it really wasn't that bad. It was a little bit funny at times, but funny for smaller kids. Kerim, it is a little ridiculous to say the least that this movie was inappropriate for age 8. It had 5 year old material!

Crap.... stupid... in a "G" movie
Why does a "G" movie have to have the words crap and stupid in the span of 5 minutes? I don't consider myself a prude, but I do NOT need my kids copying this language. Very disappointed.
