What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this drama/thriller (which is a remake of a 1950s classic that most kids probably haven't seen) has lots of urban destruction, as well as some scenes of science-fiction-style violence perpetrated against people. There's some blood and some graphic visuals, such as when a man with broken legs is healed through super-science and his broken legs are seen straightening out. There's also a notable amount of product placement, particularly for Windows and McDonald's. On a positive note, there's basically nothing in the way of swearing or sex, and the movie offers thought-provoking discussion about humanity's relationship with Earth's ecology.

Positive messages: An alien visitor judges mankind's stewardship of the planet Earth and finds us wanting -- resulting in a plan to eradicate human life from the planet. Discussion of loss and death; discussion of the human capacity for change in the face of disaster.
Positive role models: The alien is unlikable; Helen is a better role model, but her character isn't really developed well.
Violence: Military forces shoot an alien visitor, with blood spatter; later, people bleed from wounds created by microscopic nano-bots that devour everything in their path. Missile strikes and bombs are rained down on indestructible alien robots and ships, with some humans in the path of the blast. A police officer is struck by a car; several supporting characters are knocked out or suffer pain as an effect of some high-pitched noise the alien technology emits.
Sex: Not applicable.
Language: Hardly any -- just one "hell" and a couple of expressions along the lines of "oh my god."
Consumerism: A good bit of product placement -- the Windows logo is clearly visible at several points, and one scene takes place at a McDonald's. The NASA logo is also visible. Several shots of cityscapes, where advertising for companies like Coca-Cola and The New York Giants can be seen.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Two people driving drink beers.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about the film's central theme: What will it take for humans to deal with issues like pollution, global warming, overpopulation, and other consequences of our industrial-technological lifestyle? Is it the media's job to point out these issues?
  • Do you think most mainstream movies have an issue-based agenda? Why or why not?
  • Families who've seen the original can also discuss the differences between the two films. How have filmmaking styles and technologies changed in the past 50 years, and what era-specific real-world concerns do the different films speak to?

What's the story?

What's the story?
In THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, astrobiologist Dr. Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) is summoned to a government staging area late at night under cover of secrecy -- because a massive object of unknown origin is headed right for Manhattan. But the object isn't an asteroid or meteor; it's a sphere capable of course correction and deceleration -- a ship of some kind. After a humanoid figure and a giant robotic machine leave the craft, a shot rings out, and the humanoid figure falls. Emerging from a cocoon of pasty goo, the visitor looks human; his name is Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), and after escaping from custody, he enlists Dr. Benson's help in his mission: to determine whether humankind should be destroyed so that the planet Earth might survive.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Remaking a 1951 genre classic, The Day the Earth Stood Still might have better visions and visuals than the low-budget original, but it lacks the heart and sense of wonder the first film had -- it's as if the people behind this film figured they could get by on special effects alone. Reeves plays the alien visitor as an unlikable, unrelenting functionary who's doing what he must: "The decision is made; the process has begun." Connelly's character tries to get him to change his mind, while also fitting in some relationship management with her distant, moody stepson (Jaden Smith); as Benson pleads and Klaatu stays impassive, the film throws plenty of big-screen spectacle at us, but it never really connects the high-tech tricks with any heart.

Director John Derrickson has previously worked on lower-budget horror films and thrillers, and he shows a capable hand with the bigger budget -- but he doesn't show as much promise with the film's bigger ideas. The Day the Earth Stood Still wants to move our minds and quicken our pulses, but it does a far better job of the latter than the former; for all of the film's discussion of how mankind is destroying the Earth, there's precious little mention of what we're doing wrong or what we could do better. It as if the filmmakers were afraid of upsetting anyone ... while they proceeded to destroy New York and show us the end result of their effects budget. In the attempt to avoid saying anything controversial, The Day the Earth Stood Still winds up not saying much of anything at all.

Disappointing movie
This movie was very disappointing. It wasn't that great at all, it had the constant annoyance of "PEOPLE ARE KILLING THE EARTH", which is getting really old, stupid, and annoying. Sure, we definitely need to cut back on pollution, but saying we are killing the earth or "draining it of its resources" is a dramatic overstatement. Also, there is a fair amount of violence that may disturb young children.

better than the remake but still not that great.
This movie is okay in my opinion, for 12 and up. The original is dated and campy. This computerized remake was entertaining but you already know what you're in for whenever Keanu Reeves acts. The most upsetting piece is easily discounted with kids who realize they're only watching movie effects. But I do get a lot of 'what if' after this.

well, since it has Keannu Reaves in it, its bad. i dont get why it got such a high rating on commonsense, i saw it when i was 8. there was one part with blood for like a second, and there is also a nasty part where they stab a alien and take his guts out, but if you fast forward through that part this movie is OK for 8+

Use this one as a family conversation starter
Too much violence, which was unnecessary to the story; thought-provoking subject, and allowed for good family conversations

The Day the Earth skiped this movie.
The Day the earth stood still is an example of what isn't broke shouldn't be fixed and this movie is a whole bunch of one-liners by Keanu Reeves. Skip it.

This was one of the, if not the, worst movie i have ever seen. It was boring, pointless, and full of CRAP! Keenu Reaves is monotone the ENTIRE MOVIE! I could have acted his part better...at least i would change my tone to make it seem that i was the least bit interested in acting the movie. and the big robot thing you see with the laser...POINTLESS! he just stands in central park or something the whole movie. i never fall asleep in any movie in the theater but i was darn close in this one. i think that a 4 year old could see this movie because there is nothing except some language. it is boring. Take the advice of someone who this movie was rated for and don't waste your saturday night or whatever on a load of crap. trust me, you won't regret it, no matter what your sci-fi friends say.

Acting ruined film.
first things first-bad acting by Keanu Reeves. Iit could have potential, but the acting (not jjust by Keanu) ruined it. it also had some vviolent parts, including blood. in one rreally nasty scene they pull the aliens gguts out.

acting is worse than the film.
i think it is a sort of good movie, but horrible acting by keanu reeves. there is one scene where an alien gets shot, and blood splatters all over someones helmet. the army is seen with guns sometimes, but they only use them once. a policeman is hit by a car at one part, and microscopic bugs kill people. there is one bad word in it, and it is very hard to notice. consumirisem for mcdonalds.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
I wasn't expecting much for this movie, as the original was so good. But this was worse than expected. The first half actually held some promise, but it quickly went downhill from there. The plot was nonexistent, as was the script. There was no development of either the characters nor of the character's inter-personal relationships, although there were a few weak efforts. The only reason I even partly like this movie is because I am a fan of Keanu Reeves, but besides that it was pretty bad. I wouldn't particularly recommend it to anyone.

Bad and product movie
This is the most dumb and worst remake. The orginal one is alot better then product placment and sucide making piece of CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry about that I frogot about my pills. Ok the original was about a alien that comes to earth to warn about a nuclear attack. It's a anti-war movie but go watch it. The remake is just a product placment like when what is it and it zooms into the citizen watch logo and there alot of microsoft and lg stuff. This i'll give a -130000000004435 yeah that low

Mature Kids Only
Well, I watched this movie with my family when I think I was 9 or 10 and I wasn't scared but I wasn't like most 9 or 10 year olds. An average 9 - 10 year old would NOT be able to watch this movie. The violence may be a little overwhelming. I think that the movie though was a little creepy with all the blood but better than some that I've seen.

enjoyable, but kind of dull and slow at times
I found it enjoyable, but it can't top the original and is just aiming for special effects and action scenes, even though they aren't even 3 action scenes, it didn't live up to the hype.

Would Not Recommend It At All.
First off, this will not ever happen because God is in control of everything!!!! Second, weird movie with a weird plot. I was kind of bored thorugh the movie trying to figure out what was happening (which was not much). Nothing really happens, weird. I would not recommend this movie to anyone. THX and God Bless!!!!

Short of expectations
This movie was pretty good, but overall I was dissapointed. It came very short of what I expected to see in the remake of a movie which was probably even better than this. Some people might like it, but that is thier own opinion. The action in it was good and the special effects were awesome, so at least the movie didn't fail completely. The main problem was that most of the movie time was taken up with drama. BOTTOM LINE: IF YOU THINK THIS IS THE KIND OF MOVIE THAT SUITS YOU, WATCH IT.
