What parents need to know

Parents need to know that the movie features cruel judgments about body size and fashion. Characters are materialistic and catty (usually as comedy, though some hurtful comments are also made). Characters use mild language (s--t) and drink alcohol. Lots of mentions of high-end fashion brands. Younger kids won't be interested, since the subject matter won't mean anything to them.

Positive messages: Both arrogant and insecure, fashionistas lie and betray one another; heroine maintains moral compass.
Violence: Girl hit by taxi flies over hood to the street, ends up in hospital with bruised face and broken leg.
Sex: Some sexual allusions ("I can think of something we can do that doesn't require any clothing"); Andy has sex with writer on their first date (after admitting she's drunk), then regrets it.
Language: One "a--hole," a couple of "hells," several s-words (Andy unleashes a stream of them during one upset).
Consumerism: All about high fashion (names dropped and shown include Prada, Pucci, Gucci, Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Bill Blass, Chloé, Marc Jacobs); plot-pointed references to Starbucks.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Social drinking at parties and restaurants; Andy drinks wine at home and gets tipsy on a date.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids

Families can talk about Andy's plan to use her assistant job as a route to becoming a journalist: How does she rationalize this choice? How does Andy learn to fit into the world of high fashion by wearing the right clothes, dieting, and becoming increasingly judgmental of others? What messages does the movie send about the importance of physical appearances?

What's the story?

What's the story?

In THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, socially conscious journalism major Andy (Anne Hathaway) takes a job at Runway fashion magazine as second assistant to ruthless editor Miranda (Meryl Streep). Andy is told repeatedly that if she survives a year, she'll be able to get a job at any magazine, but has no idea how tough her year will be: Her primary jobs are fetching coffee and outfits from various designers around town, and running personal errands for Miranda. Andy is also at the beck and call of first assistant Emily (Emily Blunt). Worse, she's reminded daily that her clothes are ugly and that she's "fat" (at size six). Art director Nigel (Stanley Tucci) gives Andy a makeover and devotes herself to pleasing Miranda, leaving her live-in boyfriend Nate (Adrian Grenier) and best friend Lilly (Tracie Thoms) feeling abandoned. But even as she's seduced by a cynical writer (Simon Baker) and enticed by the sense of power the fashion folks claim for themselves, Andy never loses her moral sensibility.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Sometimes over-the-top and sometimes sentimental, Prada is most notable for Meryl Streep's remarkably subtle performance as super-diva Miranda Priestly. While the movie loves its costumes and montages (often together), the plot is creaky and the target far too easy: Everyone knows the world of haute couture is cutthroat, imperious, and lurid.

Streep's Miranda is complex and compelling. Though her outfits and superciliousness are as outrageous as everyone else's, Miranda tends to speak quickly and quietly, to assume her supremacy even as she's vulnerable.

Great for 12 and up!
This is such a wonderful movie and really makes you laugh! It's a great film aside from the begining with the women getting dressed and the foul language.

Great for Tweens, not for younger
The use of alcohol is at a minimum and is less than most movies than seen in today's movies, however this is not a PG movie either. This definately need to be a PG-13 movie due to the body image issues and stong language. It is great for tweens and givens them something to really to recognize with. Every tween can identify with one of the characters in the movie.

Not exactly good.
I thought this movie was good if you are looking to watch a movie with younger kids. However, I would not watch this movie again.

A Great Movie for your Tweens!
The Devil Wears Prada is a wonderful movie that i loved and i think that other tweens will too! There is a little language and sexual stuff but overall its not too bad. it also gives a good message by that the character andy has a stuborn, rude boss but perserveres and does not give up! I give The Devil Wears Prada 4 Stars!

Very good, on and off.
This movie was verryyyy good, but it was one of those where the Main story is cute, but her social life stinks and is boring. The whole time I was watching it I am like....Get back to the part at Miranda Priestly's. Those parts were good and Meryl Streep Is dynamite!

A glimpse into the fashion world
I really enjoyed this movie. The content was not terrible, but definitely not for people under 11.

THE chick flick
Streep's acting is superb, and the overall message is to fit in with you can, but never totally conform to what everybody else is doing. This movie though, is 100% chick-flick, not for guys who feel manly about themselves.

Awesome... But skip through some parts
AWESOME! Yes I am 9. Yes I have seen it. Its good but may make kids really conscious about their bodies. Do skip through the "kissy" part because I have seen it and -believe me- its nothing your kids need to see.Andy does ditch her fashionista boss in the end though and , BTW, Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep are AWESOME in this video! Meryl Streep was as good as she was in Mamma Mia!

Streep fans must watch:)
Meryl Streep nailed this role as Miranda. Is there anything she can't do?Andy is seen drinking but not in a trashy way, she sleeps with a guy on a first date, nothing is shown. No nudity, though it is implied. Designers are advertised as well. Amazing movie overall, and a must-see for all the Streep fans out there:)

Very commercialized...pretty good.
This movie was great, especially with Anne Hathaway. There is some cussing, but it's not that bad; there is also minimal drinking, but that should not be a big issue either. Overall, a girl into shopping will like this movie like I did!

Great.
Love this movie. I watch it with my mom a lot (who loves it as well). Really funny and interesting. It's great for everyone. The overall message is that giving up who you are isn't worth it.

Perfect from 10 and up. Good Role Models
I feel that Anne Hathaway in this movie is a great role model. Her boss in the movie was rude, and unappreciating of her work, but Anne didn't give up. She perservered and that is a good message to send to kids of age ten and up. This movie was also entertaining.
