What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this remake of hit French comedy The Dinner Game is anchored by a premise that is, on its face, quite mean-spirited: The main character is invited to a dinner where he must bring someone whom his colleagues can ridicule. Plenty of mockery does take place, but there’s a lesson about conscience and morality buried amid the snark. There’s some swearing (including "s--t") and sexual content (nude women covered in body paint, references to "BJs," etc.), as well as social drinking. Expect teens to be drawn in by stars Paul Rudd and Steve Carell.

Positive messages: The movie shows that some people are willing to do anything to get ahead, even if it means mocking and taking advantage of others. But it ultimately sends the message that doing so -- even if there might be significant material rewards -- isn't acceptable behavior, and there might be a moral price to pay.
Positive role models: Tim is initially self-centered and materialistic, willing to lie to his girlfriend and take advantage of Barry to help further his career. But he slowly realizes that material gains aren't worth the toll on his conscience or his personal relationships.
Violence: A few intense arguments escalate into brawls, complete with people throwing heavy objects at each other. A deranged woman takes out her frustrations on a very unfortunate sports car, leaving it a badly dented, moderately functional heap. A swordfight leads to a man losing his finger.
Sex: One scene featuring three people engaged in erotic play involves nude women covered in body paint. There's also some suggestive dialogue and innuendo; for example, a woman begs a man to spank her, and a man confesses to being ignorant of a specifc parts of his wife's sexual anatomy. References to "BJs" and hookers.
Language: Some swearing, including one "f--k," a few uses of “s--t” and “bulls--t," "hell," "damn," "ass," and "oh God" (used as an exclamation).
Consumerism: A Porsche sports car plays an important role in the film and is mentioned by name.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Some social drinking.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about the movie's message. What's the ultimate take-away? Does any of the positive stuff get lost amid the movie's humor?

  • Would you be willing to make fun of other people for personal gain? Do you think it would be easy to stand up and do the right thing, even if your job was at risk?

  • Who are the real "idiots" in this movie? How can you tell?

What's the story?

What's the story?

Based on filmmaker Francis Veber’s French comedy Le Diner Des Cons (The Dinner Game), DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS stars Paul Rudd as Tim, a financial analyst who wants to move up -- literally and figuratively -- to the big leagues at his firm. A deal he suggests is well-received, but first he must pass the ultimate test: Bring a guest to a company dinner expressly to show off his or her idiocy. As it happens, he nearly runs over the perfect candidate -- Barry (Steve Carrell) works for the IRS and makes painstakingly assembled still-lifes populated by stuffed mice. (They’re actually cuter than they sound.) Barry is eager to make a friend in Tim and agrees to go to dinner, but the 24 hours before the actual event finds the two thrown together in the silliest of ways.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

A Paul Rudd-Steve Carrell production can’t fail -- they are, hands down, two of the funniest men working in comedy today. In fact, they’re so simpatico as a team that they should take the show on the road. When they’re on screen, they’re always watchable, with their singular expressions and easy delivery. The supporting cast -- comprised of such comedic heavy-hitter as Jemaine Clement and Zach Galifianakis -- also appeals.

But Dinner for Schmucks still isn’t exactly the perfect cinematic meal. Director Jay Roach and his actors go for broke in terms of absurdity, but there’s something about it that doesn’t quite translate. (Maybe it played better in French?) While some bits are hilarious, others -- like a side plot about Tim’s sexually aggressive female stalker -- feel like a strain. And some sections just seem downright disappointing; the aforementioned dinner, for instance, is a free-for-all mock-fest, and it’s hard to laugh freely when you're cringing too much. One of the key problems, actually, is that the movie takes too long to arrive at that pivotal event in the first place; by the time we finally get to dinner, we’re not all that hungry anymore.

Dark, sometimes funny comedy too cruel for most
This is a dark comedy about being cruel and rude to others that are different, even though they are probably quite special. The two leads play off each other well, but that's still no excuse for the dramatic undertone. Parents: This is a pretty offensive movie, with plenty of sex-related dialogue and innuendoes. Characters are seen about to engage in sex, with partial nudity. There's also plenty of language, accomapnied with drug references, and some obssessive behavior by characters. Bottom Line: There's too much drama in this comedy, and drama doesn't belong in a movie that's supposed to make you feel good. Thanks for reading! - Movie Man

This movie was crap. It would be a great movie if all the sexual references were out of it because there were so many like every second! Me and my family had to walk put because it was so horrible. I had high expectatations bc I love Steve carell. Mature older teens like 15+ I guess could be ok..

Can't believe this was rated pg-13
Not something you want to watch WITH your teens. One scene goes on about a woman's clitoris and says the word a number of times. Very crude!

The funniest movie I have ever seen. Ever.
Nonstop funny throughout the whole thing! Some of the most laugh-worthy moments in all of cinema were in this film. However, if you want a comedy that's smarter and more realistic, try watching Easy A, but if you just want to laugh your head off for two hours, Dinner for Schmucks is more than perfect.

Terrible. Absolutely awful.
Dinner for Schmucks was horrible. It was filled with crude humor and explicit sex references that were used every other line. My family actually had to walk out of the theater. I can't think of single movie that I've seen that has had so much crude humor. This movie was horrible, and I wouldn't waste my time watching it.

Shame for taking people's money for this movie.
NOT FUNNY.......not even in a corny way. It took all we could do to NOT to leave the movie. Stayed hoping something would work. Didn't! Worst movie this year.

FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY!!
I took my awesome 11 year old son to see this and WE LOVED IT!! The crude humor explained on this site was not near as bad as I thought it would be. We laughed out loud during the whole movie so much that we got the hiccups. The small little sexual humor parts were not long enough to be uncomfortable. This movie has a great message and I think I even shed a tear at the happily ever after end.

We laughed and laughed
My wife and two adult children and I saw this movie together. It is really corny, but we laughed harder than we have laughed in years. It is totaly unrealistic and immature, but there are so many classic lines that you need to take notes. Hidden away in the silliness is a good lesson about friendship and how to treat other people.

Perfect for kids 11 and older!
I love it I seriously think that parents should let there kids see it if they won't repeat anything! There is some on and off language that is harsh but don't listen to this website and go on and let your kid see it! You won't regret it!

Some sexual references totally not necessary! Funny movie but a little too much sexual language and talk for my 16 year old son! Also be warned...R rated previews for other movies.

My son, who's almost 13, wanted to see this movie and from what I had heard, it seemed appropriate humor for a boy his age. WRONG! The only time we both laughed was at the beginning. It went downhill from there. Certain scenes were vulgar, bordering on pornographic and extremely suggestive. I was so embarrassed by the content, I actually covered my son's eyes. When it looked like I was going to have to shield him from the rest of the movie, we walked out. That's a first. Fortunately the theatre personnel refunded our tickets without question. There is no way this movie should be PG-13.

not appropriate for under 12
Great movie! Very funny... some bad language just like any other PG-13 movie. Steve Carrell is at his best once again! Due to the heavy sexual content, this movie is definitely iffy for immature 12 year olds, and NOT a good movie for people under 12. Great movie otherwise!

The review that this website has given portrays the movie as a funny, mild PG-13 movie. While it is indeed funny, the movie is far from mild. The sexual content in this movie is simply excessive. All it truly needed was some more nudity for it to be R. There is constant talk about sex, references to "BJ's", "prostitutes", and "Hookers." The sexual humor is very explicit- in one scene, a women asks another man to "roleplay" with her and pretend to "spank" her. She is heard to be making groaning noises and calls her herself "a naughty schoolgirl." This same lady, in a later scene, claims that she "is wet." Additionally, a man claims he loses his wife's "clitoris." This conversation continues for 10-15 seconds. There is a scene where a man is found with two near naked women (leaves cover their private parts), posing erotically. This movie is simply not a family movie- the sexual references make the whole experience awkward. Watch the movie by yourself before letting your kids watch it.
