What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this movie version of the Comedy Central series is filled to the brim with lewd sexual acts, language, and violence. The cartoon parody is meant to push the boundries of taste, but amidst violence against women, the violation of corpses, kids asking to be sexually abused, heads blown off at close range, the drinking of baby blood ... who -- and especially what child -- is going to be thinking of this as a parody?

  • This is meant to push the boundaries of taste and appropriateness, and does so: From children begging an audience to perform sexual acts upon them to female corpses being sexually violated.
  • People in charge abuse their power and sexualize every possible situation. No one behaves admirably for even a second.
  • Extreme cartoon violence and violence against women. A dead woman is dragged around as a character's girlfriend and violated. Bombs, gun violence, sexual violence, characters heads being blown off at close range, baby blood being drunk and more.
  • All body parts, including extended shots of penises and nipples are shown. Characters are shown in pornographic poses with other characters. Violation of women, characters masturbating to violent acts. Apparently all in the name of parody.
  • Many combinations of all the bad language: "s--t," "c--k," "c--t," "f--k," "motherf--ker," "t--ties," "s--t covered c--ks," and worse. Racial slurs and a character named Jew Producer.
  • Zales diamonds, Disney, cell phones all mentioned.
  • Even the opening credits have the sound effects of someone smoking a bong and blowing bong smoke. Characters drink and get drunk, smoke cigarettes.

What's the story?

The Drawn Together gang discovers that they are not being censored, which (after much cursing and many explicit sexual acts) clues them into the fact that not only has their show been cancelled, but they are not real. Moreover, they are being chased by a robot named I.S.R.A.E.L. (Seth MacFarlane), who wants to erase them. They travel through different cartoon lands, like Bedrock and South Park, in order to elude their pursuers. Will they escape doom? Rest assured, these characters will stop at nothing to save themselves.

Is it any good?

Comedy Central's popular show must contend with censors when it airs on TV. But the movie version has a no-holds-barred approach to discarding any shred of decency that might exist without censoring. There is no discernible plot arc either -- essentially this movie is about the characters' fight for their survival. Is that worth making a movie about? It seems to be an excuse to see Foxxy have sex with various men and women, or for characters to masturbate on screen. Even worse, because of the TV show, this lewd free-for-all will draw in teens. And that's even less funny than the actual movie -- which is really saying something.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about violence, and especially violence against women. Does seeing it on screen make you cringe every time, or do you think the more you see of it the less it affects you?

  • The same goes for sex on TV and in the movies. Do you think seeing so much on screen affects you? Why or why not?

  • What are examples of good parodies? Do they always have to be over-the-top and pushing the envelope? Or can they be more innocent fun, like Mel Brooks movies? Which do you prefer?

Hilarious black humored satire for adults only
Drawn Together has always been one of those shows that's better suited for adults with a bad sense of humor, and that's certainly the case with their first direct-to-DVD feature film. This movie stuffs every offensive joke possible into a giant, vulgar glob of un-PC black humor. The film contains many scenes of extreme cartoon violence, explicit sex, graphic nudity, and strong profanity. Puppies and babies are killed for laughs, a man has sex with a corpse, characters have BDSM orgies for no reason, and boobs, penises, and vaginas are all on full display here (both animated and realistic). The film is also very un-PC; jokes are constantly made referencing racism and homophobia, racial epithets are rattled off in a long list, and stereotyping is at a ridiculous level. There aren't any positive role models, and the film's only message seems to be that it's okay to be as offensive as possible. The film is well-written as a satire of censorship in television, and it's actually extremely funny, but it's still much too explicit and dark humored for young audiences. This is a great film best kept for adults with an iron stomach.

No redeeming value
As someone who works to educate people about and to end the vile phenomenon of crush videos, the fact that this so called entertainment makes light of this issue is truly sickening. "Drawn Together" was already without redeeming value due to its misogyny. Anyone who wishes to can read more at the stopcrush dot org website
