What parents need to know

Parents need to know that The Expendables will definitely appeal to teens (and, frankly, boys of all ages) thanks to a cast filled with living action legends like Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet LiArnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. But since it's filled with over-the-top action violence -- including shootings, stabbings, severed limbs, spurting blood, explosions, and burning bodies -- it's not age-appropriate for younger viewers. There's also some violence against women, and language is strong (including both "f--k" and "s--t"), though not constant. Drugs are a key part of a subplot, and one character has a drug problem, even though viewers never see any drugs consumed. Other characters smoke cigars, pipes, and cigarettes. It has perhaps the most impressive action cast ever assembled for a movie, including some living legends, and so it will be irresistible to boys of all ages.

Positive messages: One of the movie's major recurring themes is that these "heroes" are mercenaries; they work for money rather than for any personal beliefs. Some do express regrets for actions not taken in their pasts.
Positive role models: The main characters are all mercenearies, and Barney is headed down a pretty heartless path -- but then he meets a girl who reaffirms his
ability to believe in something. Sandra tries to stand up for what's right, and her actions are enough to inspire Barney. Unfortunately, she also manages to get kidnapped and must be rescued by the men, so she's not as strong as she could have been.
Violence: The characters shoot, stab, impale, pummel, pound, and blow up just about everything and everyone in sight. Some of them prefer guns -- including some of the biggest, loudest weapons you've ever seen -- while others are knife experts. Many minor characters die without much consequence. Viewers see blood spurts, explosions, car chases, and burning bodies. There are severed limbs and heads and exploding torsos. A woman has bruises on her face from an abusive boyfriend, and another woman is kidnapped and tortured (with water).
Sex: No kissing or sex, but one character sulks over finding another man in his girlfriend's house. Tool brings home an attractive woman and pats her on the bottom. Some brief talk about sex and relationships. Barney becomes obsessed with a girl nearly four decades younger than he
is, but the movie doesn't necessarily define this as a romantic
obsession (it could be something like mutual respect).
Language: A few uses of "f--k" and several of "s--t." Other words include "suck d--ks," "ass," "goddamn," "balls," "hell," "a--hole," and "damn."
Consumerism: Not applicable.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: The main villain is essentially a drug dealer; he controls the cocaine industry on a small island, and there are stacks of cocaine bags in one scene. One of the good guys is said to have a drug problem, though viewers never see him actually taking drugs. Two characters smoke cigars, and one character smokes a fancy pipe. Some of the villains smoke cigarettes. The main characters are seen clinking beers while flying a plane. A character brings champagne to a girl's house, but it's never opened. Another character orders a martini with olives that viewers never see.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about the film's violence. How did it affect you? What impact did it have?
  • What did Barney learn over the course of the movie? Did any of the other Expendables share his journey? Are they heroes? Why or why not?
  • Many of the characters in the film smoke. How does this make them look? Do they seem cool? Do you think that was the intent?
  • The movie features some violence against women. What is the movie's attitude toward this kind of violence?

What's the story?

What's the story?
Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his team of "Expendables" (Jason Statham, Jet Li, etc.) are hired for a nearly impossible job involving a rogue CIA agent (Eric Roberts) who's taken over the drug trade on a small island and converted the local general into his puppet. Barney initially decides the job isn't worth the money, but then the general's daughter (Giselle Itié) changes his mind; she truly believes in fighting for a cause, the way Barney did before he became a mercenary for hire. So the team storms the island with full force and brutal firepower, this time for all the right reasons. Can they survive the impossible odds that await?

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

The advertising materials for THE EXPENDABLES carry just the right kind of gleeful, confident attitude -- but sadly, Stallone's actual movie is a giant mess and a wasted opportunity. There are too many characters for any to develop any kind of depth: Lee Christmas (Statham) is upset about his girlfriend, Ying Yang (Li) has a complex about his size, Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren) is on drugs and out of control, etc. Writer/director Stallone misses his chance to be playful, or -- better still -- to deliver a commentary on action movies in general.

Then there's his action footage, which is among the worst ever filmed. It's shaky and hacked up to the point of inducing headaches, and it's often difficult to tell which player is which. A fight between Jet Li and Lundgren should have been an enticing draw, but instead it's ridiculous and mushy. Fortunately, Mickey Rourke is absolutely superb in his few scenes as a burned-out former team member, ruminating about his lost path in life.

The Expendables is one of the best action movies i ever seen and this movie will definitely appeal to your older teens and parents you need to know that the expendables has a lot of intense violence a lot of strong language used and some drinking, drugs, and smoking used.

R means 17+ enough said.
Okay Parents when it comes down to it OBEY the Ratings. It is rated R because it has some over the top violence. However the movie was insanely awesome. Just wait till your kids can handle this much violence.

Surprisingly graphic, but pretty fun
3 stars might be pushing it. I think for what it IS, an action movie, it's entertaining and 3-star worthy. If you're looking for thoughtful, highbrow fare, you're barking up the wrong tree. I was surprised how graphic some of the violence was. People getting shot with big ol' bullets that make their upper bodies explode into chunks! haha It's quick, but you can catch it. The gore is obviously fake though, pretty bad effects if you ask me. I saw it in a Cinemark with "Extreme Digital" projection, so it was higher resolution, maybe that's why the special effects weren't incredibly convincing. That happens sometimes. The language was rather irritating also. Anyway, all that aside, it was fun to watch the good guys kick some butt.

Rambo5 with more talking and help from friends
A lot of video game playing boys are going to want to see it. It plays like an M rated game with much killing of the "bad guys". If your kids are on the mature side and can handle some blood and gore, they should be fine. The movie goes pretty fast through the blood. Language is bad at times but not excesive. Corny jokes. The usual Stallone stuff. My son really liked it.

Great Action for Teens and up!
I love this movie. The Violence is the only issue in the movie. The movie however is based on the violence. This would be a great father son movie. There is no nudity, sex, or drug usage. As far as language, it is not over the top but comes with most action films. I saw this with my Dad and we loved it.

Did the reviewer even watch the movie past the first 15 minutes? Not to spoil the movie or anything, but that is one of the key plot twists of the movie, how they decide to go against what they have done for years of being mercenaries and fight for a cause... next time try watching the movie you review. Great role model of men willing to stand up for those incapable of defending themselves

Nothing special
A testosterone driven action movie, typical of what one can expect from Stalone. Little plot line, but lots of guns and explosions.

Great Film
Well this was a very good action film. One of the characters showa regret for the people he has killed.. This is a violent movie and there is plenty of shooting, stabbing, explosions and fist fight. But most of this is standard fare for an action flick. There is some cursing and crude language to look out for.

Its Cool
It was a pretty good movie if you like action movies without a great storyline. Don't get me wrong the storyline is good just not great but the action is really cool. There is also some blood and gore, mainly right at the begining.

Crazy good but extra violent. No younger than me.
My favorite movie ever!! It was really violent! One guy had a huge shotgun and blew the other guy in half, his waist up flying against the wall. My rating, R for intense sequences of strong bloody violence throughout, some sexual refferences and some brief strong language

enjoyable for some 14+, preferably 15+
i think this is basically a full-on gore-fest filled with the worlds biggest action heroes from previous films. i believe when i saw it i loved the gore and stuff, but i am one of those guys who can laugh through a grenade-launcger through the torso, but almost faint whilst watching a detailed surgery show.

AWESOME MOVIE!
I REALLY LIKED THIS MOVIE! IT WAS VERY GOOD! IT HAD A BUNCH OF VERY FAMOUS ACTION STARS! FOR EXAMPLE: JASON STATHAM, JET LI, AND SYLVESTER STALONE!

Another great flick by Stallone
The Expendables is an awesome action film by Sylvester Stallone and stars also himself(lol) Jason Statham, Jet Li and many other 80's action stars. Great fun for 15+. Some of the kills are kinda gory. There's a brief torture scene with water pouring to womans mouth. This is no Rambo, but the violence is frequent and gory (severed limbs and heads). Some bad language and drug use which isn't explicit :)

Stupid, skip it
This movie was HORRIBLE! The acting was terrible and the plot made me cringe. The action sequences are somehow not entertaining. This film is basically an excuse to show a lot of exploding heads and stabbings. There is a lot of gore, including a guy getting ripped in half. Also, there is a scene where a woman is tortured by waterboarding. I would rate it R for strong bloody action violence throughout, language and a scene of torture.
