What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this family-friendly TV movie based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon blends cross-generational comedy with feel-good messages about responsibility and caring for others. The movie's mixture of CG animation and live action may be hard for the cartoon's young fans to adapt to, but the stellar cast and clever storyline will win them over. The movie's content is fine for kids, and its characters actually model some appealing behavior in a sweet teen romance as well as in a man's willingness to make positive changes in his life. Be prepared for some potty humor (farting, diarrhea, etc.) that's sure to please the kids, as well as the obvious embedded promotion of the original cartoon, if your kids aren't already fans.

  • The movie intends to entertain rather than to educate, but there are some feel-good lessons about being responsible and willing to help others.
  • Viewers see a man learn to take responsibility for himself and be more receptive to others'  needs. The content also reminds viewers that there are some disadvantages to always getting what you want and that helping others has rewards, too. A romantic relationship evolves out of a friendship in a sweet, mutually respectful way. On the downside, in one scene, a man bribes his friends to help by promising to fix them up with "hot" girls if they cooperate, and there are a few instances of bathroom humor like burping, pooping, and farting.
  • When given the proper impetus, Timmy is receptive to the idea of change and comes to see the advantages of being a responsible adult. Tootie sets a good example for him, always taking the moral high ground and acting on others' behalf.
  • Live-action characters fall victim to cartoon-style mishaps like falling out of a tree or wrecking a motorcycle, but no injury results from the incidents. In one scene, both the CGI characters and a human one are electrocuted, though the damage is brief.
  • The story centers on a budding relationship between two young adults, so there's some flirting and one kiss, all of which is measured on Timmy’s "Love Meter." In one instance, male characters refer to girls as "hot."
  • Not applicable.
  • The movie was inspired by one of Nickelodeon's most successful cartoons, so if your kids don't tune in already, they might want to after seeing this special.

What's the story?

A FAIRLY ODD MOVIE: GROW UP, TIMMY TURNER! is a live-action and CG-animated TV movie that centers on a now 23-year-old Timmy (Drake Bell) as he does his best to resist nature's efforts to make him grow up. With the help of his fairy godparents, Cosmo (voiced by Daran Norris) and Wanda (Susanne Blakeslee), Timmy has managed to maintain his 10-year-old existence, much to the chagrin of his parents and his suspicious fifth-grade teacher, Mr. Crocker (David Lewis). But when his former classmate, Tootie (Daniella Monet), returns to town and steals Timmy's heart, he's forced to choose between his wish-granting godparents and the appeal of life as a grown-up with Tootie ... that is, if he can save them all from the greedy grasp of oil tycoon Hugh J. Magnate, Jr. (Steven Weber) and his accomplice, Mr. Crocker.

Is it any good?

Nickelodeon commemorates the 10th anniversary of its popular series, The Fairly OddParents, with this family-geared movie that brings fans' favorite characters to life in a truly appealing way. The combination of live-action and CGI, punctuated by the hilarious crossover of Wanda and Cosmo as humans (played by Cheryl Hines and Jason Alexander), is a refreshing change to the show's linear animation style, and it's so well written –- and expertly cast -– that even long-time fans won't be put off by the differences.

Happily the movie's content caters to a range of ages, which makes it a great choice for family movie night. Tootie and Timmy's relationship is innocent and sweet, and physical contact is limited to one meaningful kiss. Violence is equally minimal, and aside from some potty humor (farting, diarrhea sounds, and burping), there's little reason to worry about watching with your kids. If you do, be sure to draw their attention to the lessons Timmy learns about being responsible and using his gifts to help others.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about learning lessons. What did Timmy learn in this movie? Why was he resistant to take on adult responsibilities? What changed his mind? What are the benefits of trying new things?

  • Kids: Did you like this movie's use of both live action and CG animation? How does it compare to the cartoon? Did any of the character or plot changes bother you?

  • If you could have wishes at your disposal, what would they be? How could you use them for others' benefit rather than your own? What rewards do we get from helping others?

  • Did watching this movie make you want to watch the original show? How much TV do you watch per day? Per week? What does that add up to per year?

Mistakes
To me alot of the charecters and actions were inaccurate. Many kids won't notice UNLESS they watched all episodes. For example, Timmy's Fairy God Parents didn't change form when exposed to the public like birds or dogs. Or Crocker's ear was not on his neck! There are many more if you watch the whole movie! Try to spot them all!

Disappointing
Disappointing. The tv shows don't match up with the movie. Also Vickie should really wear a bra i don't know why she isn't wearing one.?

The Worst Movie I Have Ever Seen
If you're a little kid who only likes immature potty humor that isn't very funny, you'll like this. For everyone else, don't watch this movie if you value your life. It was awful!

So much mistakes, so STUPID!!
Well, in fact when I saw the whole movie, ha Timmy turner is a twenty-three adult and he's still in school in 5th grade, biggest mistake ever seen, he can't even grow up and leave his parents, that is very amusing and very disappointing, it reminds me of fred the movie (which fred the movie makes plenty of mistakes), and well... in fact this is not the fairly odd parents that I liked to see, its pretty obivious, they're too stupid to make this as an animated version much more better than this real-life one, and I dont get it! Timmy falls in love with tootie, and doesnt care about trixie, wow Im glad... well maybe this is not what I expected this to see a fairly ODD movie like this!

A cute remake of a classic nicktoon!
I do agree that it is a weird remake. Mostly because it is live action mixed in with CG animation. Fans of the show might find it hard to get used to the change from animated to live action. Although, it is a very cute movie! Families will enjoy this sweet movie!

Stupid!
I saw it and it was very stupid! It's crazy! Why couldn't have Timmy just grow up and stay as an adult. When you grow up, you have to act like you are growing up, Not stay as a kid! Why does it have 4 stars? It's sending kids the wrong messages! When I grow up I am never going to let my kids watch it! It was horrible when Timmy gave up his faries! Like the worst thing I have ever seen! I liked the cartoon way better! DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE!! IT WILL HURT YOUR EYES SO BADLY!!!
