Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder (NR)

common sense media says

Tongue-in-cheek humor keeps this sci-fi cartoon popping.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this movie is filled with things that Futurama is known for: lots of crude jokes, pop references, silly gags, mild profanity, sexual references, and social commentary. Just because it's animated doesn't mean it's for kids, so be aware of the adult content before popping it in the DVD player for Family Movie Night.

Positive messages: Bender drinks, schemes, or womanizes every waking moment; Leela is prone to fits of rage; and Leo Wong (whose stereotyped portrayal might offend some viewers) is dedicated to destroying ecosystems the universe over.
Violence: Laser blasts, leech bites, murder of a woman whose body is stepped on, excessive shooting by gangsters (last about 20 full seconds.)
Sex: Innuendoes everywhere you look. Bender and Fanny talk about sex, make out on the dinner table, moan and groan. A Cirque de Soleil parody called Gearotica features female robots with spread legs and a pair of gyrating robots exchanging a CD, as though they are having sex. Leela is briefly shown removing her shirt.
Language: Lots of middle-range cussing. "Damn,""hell,"" bastard," "vagina," "melons," a discussion about butts, "crap," "ass," "give her a jump," "she's got a nice pair," "I kissed his ass from cheek to shining cheek," and so on.
Consumerism: Product placement includes XM Radio, TiVo, Tetris, Windows Vista, Las Vegas and its hotels (parodied, but recognizable.)
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Some characters smoke, many drink (Bender always drinks,) and there are pot references.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about where we are headed in terms of our own ecosystem in the 21st century. Yes, this cartoon is a fantasy, but what rings true? What really happens when new hotels, malls, and golf courses are built?

What's the story?

What's the story?
Welcome to Mars Vegas, where developer Leo Wong is focused on destroying all ecosystems so that he can build his mini-golf empire. Leela (Katey Sagal) is offended by his indifference to Mother Nature, and she joins a group of eco-feminists who are determined to undermine his plan. Meanwhile, Fry (Billy West) has discovered a sudden ability to read others' thoughts and is adopted by a secret society of unlikely heroes who are determined to save the universe from destruction. Bender (John Di Maggio) falls for a mobster's wife and wreaks his usual havoc.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

While there are some laugh-out-loud moments, FUTURAMA: INTO THE WILD GREEN YONDER is also offensive. But, that's the point. It's bawdy, undeterred by political correctness, and it's fun. There's plenty of the sassiness and bite that fans of Futurama have come to expect. Mature teens will enjoy the colorful adventures of the crew, as well as cameos by Snoop Dogg and Penn Jillette. Overall this is a raunchy, funny DVD that will please fans of the hit TV series; it's just not for younger kids.
