Parents need to know that Lucy's bullying behavior causes her little brother a lot of grief. She seems to glean pleasure in watching the poor kid sweat. Some of the addictive behavior that Linus exhibits might set off alarm bells for parents, but most of that will go over kids' heads because it is played for laughs.
Lucy informs Linus that their grandmother is coming to town, and she does not abide children who depend on their blankets for comfort. So Lucy takes it upon herself to wean Linus off of his blanket dependency. She hides it from him, flies it like a kite, buries it, while Linus goes through the fits and pains of giving up something that brings him comfort. His pal Charlie Brown is there to help him through his trials, though there's only so much he can do when facing a bully like Lucy.
Classic Peanuts fun makes this movie enjoyable for young viewers. The characters are as unique as they've always been: Lucy is crabby, Linus is a mellow guy when his blanket is around, Schroeder is focused on his piano, and Charlie Brown is a helpful pal, but he's no knight in shining armor.
Parents who are worried about older siblings picking up some bullying behavior might keep an eye out for Lucy who does not hold back on insults, threats and bonks on the head -- Peanuts fans will know what to expect. Though it's not a stellar an example of great Peanuts fare, it's a decent addition to the pantheon.
Charlie Brown tells Linus that having a blanket is not the worst idea in the world. Do you have anything like a blanket or a teddy bear that you depend on? How does it make you feel better?
If you were Linus, how would you tell a big sister like Lucy to mind her own business? Who could you ask for help?
Linus and the gang watch TV sometimes, but that's about all of the media that they use. Talk about some of the things that kids who are the age of the Peanuts gang might be doing in the "real" world.
