Parents need to know that this is a charming and funny movie, free of objectionable material. It's pure silliness and entertainment, and families can enjoy it together.
Herbie, the famous VW bug with a mind of its own, is back. This time, Herbie is in France for a big road race. He meets a girl car (though how he knows it's a girl is a bit of a mystery) and falls in love. The object of his affection happens to have a spunky woman driver, an unusual example of a strong woman doing a man's job. In this adventure, Herbie experiences an avalanche, a water rescue, bad French accents, and some great trick driving.
For all the improbability of the plot, HERBIE GOES TO MONTE CARLO manages to be funny and rather charming. The antics of the besotted bug are quite funny, as are the reactions of Herbie's owner and mechanic, who just want to get him in the race. Add the usual pair of incompetent diamond thieves, and you've got a very silly but comical situation, finishing with an exciting race in which Herbie manages to make it to the front of the pack no matter how far behind he gets. It all adds up to good, clean fun.
Families can talk about the popularity of Herbie the Love Bug and why it's so fun to imagine that machines, like a car, have minds of their own.
