Some laughs, but an iffy message for girls.

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 14–16

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Although the movie's ostensible message is that everyone should just be who they are, young female viewers are much more likely to get the idea that they need to be thin, tan, and dolled up to be sexy and attractive to the opposite sex. While there's nothing wrong with wanting to look nice, the Zeta girls go from not caring a fig for how they look to (temporarily) becoming just as judgmental and looks-obsessed as the sorority girls they disliked. Shelley's dream is to be a Playboy centerfold. On the other hand, at least Shelley makes philanthropy cool (even if she can't say the word properly). The Iota Mu sisters are typical movie "mean girls," doing their best to humiliate the Zetas and stand in the way of their success. A girl in a back brace is mocked.
  • Violence:

A woman violently twists the nipples of a man she's angry with (but he actually enjoys it); Shelley gets hurt standing over a steaming manhole cover. Several pratfalls.
  • Sex:

All of the scenes featuring Playboy bunnies show women nearly undressed. Shelley walks around in lingerie, bikinis, or other cleavage-bearing outfits all the time. She disrobes in front of the sorority, and her nude body is visible from the back for a few seconds. As for actual sex, there isn't any, but there are a couple of quick kisses and lots of flirting and conversations about virginity/hooking up (including a symbolic "sacrifice" of one of the virginal sorority sisters). One male character is in thrall of a woman who turns him on by twisting his nipples painfully. Star Anna Faris appeared in Playboy (though not fully naked) at the time of the film's premiere.
  • Language:

Mostly the word "bitch" and its variations, plus one "f--kin'" and body parts like "nipples," "boobies," "penis," etc.
  • Consumerism:

The Playboy brand, the Playboy mansion, and Hugh Hefner are featured throughout the film. Also shown are Haagen-Dazs ice cream and the make-up store Sephora. Shelley mentions a Prius.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Lots of drinking at the Playboy mansion and the college campus' Greek parties, where presumably some students are under 21.

What Parents Need to Know

About The House Bunny

Parents need to know that although this fluffy college-set comedy is supposedly about why it's important to be yourself, it has some iffy messages for the tween and young teen girls who are most likely to want to see it -- chiefly, that women need to doll themselves up to attract the opposite sex. Since main character Shelley is a Playboy bunny, sex in general is a main theme of the movie, even though the only "action" is a couple of kisses. There are constant references to Playboy: The mansion, the magazine, and Hugh Hefner himself all play central roles in the plot. Scenes set in the mansion include scads of barely dressed bunnies wearing revealing lingerie or tiny bikinis, and Shelley does the same even after she leaves (in one scene, the entire length of her nude body is visible from the back). Characters also discuss sex and virginity. One sorority sister is pregnant, but her pregnancy is used like a prop instead of taken seriously. Language includes one "f--k" and many uses of "bitch," and characters drink frequently (though generally not to excess) at both the mansion and college parties.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about whether Shelley is a good role model. Is her dream of becoming a Playboy centerfold an admirable one? What do the Zeta sisters learn from her? What does she learn from them? What is the movie's message about young women? What does "sisterhood" mean, according to the Zetas? Ultimately, does the movie reinforce stereotypes or undermine them?

    My concerns are:
    • Inappropriate sexual content
    • Inappropriate language

    Forgettable but amusing

It took me until about half-way through the movie to actually get into it; most of the humor is typical dorky teen-movie stuff. Mid-PG-13 rating - language, little bit of goofy violence, usual count of sexual *references* for something dealing with the playboy mansion. The initial sterotyping was obnoxious, but I like the fact that later in the movie the main character does try to "smarten-up". Overall it's not a great movie, but it's okay enough for it's genre; I'd recommend Sydnie White and She's The Man long before it, though.

Lots of sexual humor (including brief nudity), so language (b-word, 1 f-word and more). It was pretty funny though

Even though this movie is a little dumb, I like it. Its a comedy about a playboy who gets kicked out of the Mansion and becomes a house mother. I learned that its ok to step out of your comfort zone, and that lying is bad.

Iffy for a 11 year old

I've watched this movie once, and I would say after Shelley moves to the Zeta sorority it becomes a little less innapropriate, just watch out for the playboy photo shoots and at the play boy mansion (no nudity though)

I think you should see this!

This movie was really good. In the beginning there is where the play boy bunnys are all in just underware and bras and dance and some inaporpriate language, but otherwise then that it is a really good movie and at the end it has a good ending of it also.

It's part Legally Blonde, part Mean Girls, does not glorify Playboy

I wish I could have checked "on" for a teen girl, and "off" for teen boys. I never like some of the stereotyping I see in movies as far as it affects boys, because so many I know never discuss movies with their parents. But I have a 14-year-old teen daughter, and found it to be fine for her and her friends. If you allow your daughter to see Legally Blonde, this is not much different. Silly and air-headed, college humor, lots of girly fashion, some sexual humor, not a big deal. Every time I thought it was going to go somewhere I didn't want it to, it didn't. There was no glorifying being a centerfold-- it actually shows how ridiculous the Bunny's "methods for getting men to like her" were when she finally has a date with a legitimate nice guy who works for a nursing home. Most of the movie is spent on the college campus and not at the Mansion, and even when they show the mansion, it is pretty innocuous-- no wild lacivious parties. There are no "nude centerfold" photo shoots. And I was glad that, while the Bunny tries to makeover a ragtag sorority, it sent a good message that once they finally were pretty, they realized they were acting mean and judgmental toward people, just like the popular sorority girls. At first I didn't like the fact that the Bunny organizes a jungle-themed type of "sacrifice" party when she finds out one of the sorority girls is "inexperienced", but after the party-goers cheer for the girl and have her slide down into a vat of jello, that's all the further it goes. They don't talk about why she's the guest of honor, she doesn't get carried off by some guy at the end of the party, nothing else. I've already had a good discussion with my daughter about how casual sex is treated like "everyone does it" in movies and how unreal that is so I felt like she could handle this scene. The Bunny gets thrown in jail briefly toward the beginning of the movie for "misinterpreting" what a police officer says and gets thrown into a cell with hookers-- some teens will "get" the whole scene and for others, it will go right over their heads.

FUNNY, some content but still FUNNY. A must-see for chick-flick fanatics.

The only thing bad about this movie is the fact that the main character is a playboy bunny. Still has a good message and some pretty wacky stuff. Watch it with mature 20 year olds and you will laugh out loud the WHOLE TIME!!!

    Great Movie

Basically, this movie is a way to show teens and preteens in a way interesting to their taste, that you can be yourself and do well in this world. If you just watch the beginning of the movie you may think it's appaling because they are teaching the wrong message, that you have to be a bimbo to get things you want and to get things done. When I saw the beginning in the theatre, I just wanted to walk out but believe me, it gets better. It's humorous and sends a good message. But if you are a parent considering letting your child watch it you should have a discussion about it because there is some content in this movie that isn't exactly perfect.
