Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (PG-13, 2008)

common sense media says

Fourth Indy isn't perfect, but it's fun. OK for older tweens

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Indiana Jones' fourth adventure is one of the most anticipated movies of the past 20 years, and kids will definitely want to see it. It bears the marks of classic Indy fare -- meaning lots of adventures, some of which (like a scene involving killer ants, or another involving an atomic bomb test) might be too spooky for younger kids. There's a supernatural and extra-terrestrial undercurrent and lots of punch-heavy good-guy-versus-bad-guy fights, which do have some blood (as well as plenty of weapons, including swords and guns). There's also a bit of light swearing ("s--t," "son of a bitch," etc.) and innuendo, and enemies routinely hurl unpleasant threats at each other. But it's all handed with roguish, acerbic Indy wit, which makes it -- for the most part -- all in good, popcorn movie fun.

Positive messages: Many double-crosses take place; a friend becomes disloyal, which endangers Indy; a long-buried lie is uncovered; enemies are portrayed one-dimensionally as purely evil; lots of bickering between a few of the characters (though there's lots of affection, too). Nevertheless, all of the havoc that takes place appears to be for the greater good.
Violence: Plenty of it, mostly played out in typical adventurous Indy fashion: Characters shoot at each other; there's lots of punching, kicking, and shoving; swords are pointed at enemies' throats; characters attack each other with guns and swords from moving cars in one extended scene. Minor characters are killed in various ways -- gunfire, falls, crashes, etc. One group goes out in flames when a powerful rocket ignites. A few parts may scare young kids -- especially a sequence in which a sea of killer ants engulfs victims, or an early scene in which Indy is nearly the victim of an atomic bomb test (scary images of mushroom clouds and exploding houses/mannequins). Also expect lots of skulls and mummies and other spooky-for-young-children elements.
Sex: Some sexual banter, but nothing lewd.
Language: A few uses of words like "bulls--t," "shut up," "son of a bitch," and "damn." One or two "s--t"s.
Consumerism: Period-accurate signage for buses, the U.S. Army, laundry soap, airlines (Pan Am).
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Very little. One character appears inebriated at one point, but it's just implied.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about what Indiana Jones stands for. If he's a good guy, why does he break the rules? Is that OK? What separates him from the "bad" guys? Are real-life bad guys as thoroughly evil as the ones in movies? Where does Mutt fit in? What does he have in common with Indy? How are they different? Families can also discuss the ongoing appeal of the Indiana Jones series. Why is Indy so popular? Why is it so hard for other movies to duplicate the Indy formula? Do you think the franchise needed another movie? Why or why not?

What's the story?

What's the story?
Indiana Jones is back with a vengeance in KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL, the long-awaited fourth installment in George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's mega-hit franchise. It's 1957, and the Russians -- led by Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett) -- have double-crossed their way into a military base in Nevada. Irina thinks the Soviets can win the Cold War by dominating the world with their minds -- but how? Find a mysterious, powerful crystal skull hidden in the South American jungle with the reluctant help of Professor Henry Jones Jr. (Harrison Ford), of course. Indy's friend Oxley (John Hurt) apparently found it once, but he's in enemy hands. Indy sets out on a rescue mission, aided and abetted by friends old and new, including motorcycle-loving, leather-jacketed punk Mutt (Shia LaBeouf).

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Decades have come and gone since our dear Dr. Jones' not-so-last crusade, and it's good to report that his return was worth the wait. Sure, the movie's good vs. evil race to the finish is marked by twists and turns that require not just a suspension, but a complete removal, of disbelief. But that's only to be expected -- after all, the Indiana Jones mythology wasn't built on reality. It's the ride, not the details, that audiences are paying for. And what a ride: The suspense, the wisecracks, the gloomy caves to explore -- they're all there. When Indy first enters the frame, it's like seeing a dear old friend. The filmmakers didn't reinvent the wheel (so don't expect any innovations), but they didn't ruin it, either.

And the newbies? When it comes to an iconic film series like this, passing the torch can be tricky. But diehard fans can relax: LaBeouf proves himself worthy enough to carry on the Indy tradition. He's prickly and adventurous, edgy and intelligent -- much like Indy himself. Though he's no Harrison Ford, LaBeouf could believably have been cut from the same cloth. As for the women, while Karen Allen's return to the series as feisty Marion is a delight, Blanchett's Russian accent is somewhat marred by plummy, Australian inflections when she says Indy's last name, which is often. And that's not the only jarring tone: While the first two-thirds of the film is classic Indy, the last act takes a hard swing that swerves into otherworldly territory. It's like Indiana Jones meets E.T. -- which is pretty iffy. The transgression's forgivable, but only just.

Indiana Jones and the CRYSTAL SKULL
It was Ok, and I looved it til I watched the other 3. They were awesome, and I realised that this one was kinda crappy. The title was too long as well. What kingdom? Why not just "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull"?

I liked this movie. It wasn't as good as all the other indy movies but it was still pretty good. There were just some frightening scenes like one part were a bad guy gets eaten by ants

fine for teens, but not for kids
The opening is Indiana getting out of a trunk of a Russians car... Indiana Jones uses inapropriate language kids will hear a lot during the film... He is reunited with his fiance from the first movie... They make little boy costumes with a whip, coat, hat, sometimes a gun...

Just alright
I think it was not as good as the first Indiana Jones and it was also way more gory and less interesting. It was more about aliens than archeology.

What happened?
I grew up watching all of the Indiana Jones films and loving them. Of course i was extremely excited to see this new film. Upon watching it I found myself extremely mad and disappointed. There was too much CGI and the plot was more ridiculous than any other film before it. As for content, I personally found nothing in here that a 10 year old wouldnt mind watching. overall its very mild and vanilla plain. In my mind this movie never happened and will never be on my shelf of films.

WHAT THE EFFIN' ELF??!
Ok, I personally believe this movie seriously RUINED the Indiana Jones series. First of all, the character of Mac was just cooked up in this movie and yet he is played out like Indy's best buddy since like childhood or something, and he evidently can't make up his mind whether he wants to be good or not, which gets slightly tedious after the first half hour. And of course, ALIENS??? WTH?? I mean, if you want to put aliens in a Spielberg flick make another Close Encounters of the Third Kind!! Seriously disappointed. Good for younger kids, though.

Good for Teens, and some Tweens
I was pretty excited when this movie came out. I was glad it was better than The Last Crusade, but it wasn't the best. I'd rank it 3rd among all the Indiana Jones movies

Another great installment to the Indy movies, but a nonsensical ending disappoints a bit
The whip. The hat. The theme music. That same old adventuring archaeologist. All these elements make up the Indiana Jones franchise. Starting in 1981, these movies have become a part of everday movie talk, and they have made Harrison Ford a star actor (along w/ his role in Star Wars). Now, we have a new installment: Indiana Jones and the Kingdome of the Crystal Skull. The storyline is quite the same: Indy travels to find a mysterious cyrstal skull to bring back to a sacred temple. Along the way, he meets rebel Mutt (brilliantly played by rising star Shia LeBouf), eccentric teacher Harold Oxly (who has been possesed by the strange skull). As with most Jones' flicks, there are twists and turns, suprises, and excitement. In fact, this could have been one of the best Indiana Jones movies, but the ending puts it slightly above Temple of Doom. I won't give it away, but it involves aliens, which is quite stupid in my opinion. Leave it to Steven Speilberg to make an ending like that. Despite this grumble, I have some content issues to point out. For a movie set in the 1950s, there is quite a bit of swearing, including a handful of racial slurs, a few s-words, and the occasional godd**m. Other than the cussing, there is some mild sexual innuendo, lots and lots of shootings and beatings, and some drug use. Overall, this Indy installment is OK for preteens and up.

fine for ten and up (depending on your family movie rules), must see the originals 1st.
I REALLY don't like this movie. In my opinion this is not as bad as the past movies. You must show you kids the past movies first so they can get a understanding of what Indiana Jones really is. Raiders of the lost ark is my favorite movie, you should show them that 1st, than the 3rd, than the 2nd, than the 4th.

Not Great
Okay. I like the other ones more.

Not as good as the first first and third, but thank goodness it doesn't have to create a rating in between PG-13 and R like #2 did.
My rating: PG [borderline with PG-13] for some intense and scary sequences/images of adventure violence, and for frequent language.

Not Much Intense Violence
This is actually the only Indy movie I think that doesn't have any INTENSE violence. The only thing parents have to worry about is the two S words that are said by Mutt.
