I think it's a cute movie, but I'm bummed about the language. We're pretty strict about not using "stupid" "crap" "shut up" "hell" or name calling like "jerk" or idiot" and unfortunately, these are often referred to as "mild" insults which is OK for older kids (at least Kindergarten or 1st grade) but completely inappropriate for kids under 4 in my opinion. I don't think this language ever adds anything to the film, so why bother putting it in? I was really disappointed about the scene with "sugar, honey, ice tea"- although many little ones will miss it altogether, why bother putting it in- it doesn't add anything but shock value for the parents :(

For a children's video, this was too vulgar. There were a lot of allusions to things that young kids don't need to be exposed to.

Madagascar
Sexual Content (Not an Issue): None. Violence (Pause): Some violent imagery will startle kids. Language (Pause): No profanity is spoken, but there is some almost-swearing, a play on Hoover Dam, and a HELP sign breaking to read HELL. Social Behavior (On): The characters learn to be loyal. Some crude humor. Commercialism (Not an Issue): None. Drug/Alcohol/Tobacco (Pause): A lion is shot with a tranquilizer.

Finally a movie you can sit through with your child and be laughing!
I took my niece to this movie and not only did she find this funny but there is enough adult humor in this movie that you both can be laughing for way different reasons! It is to date the funniest I've seen of the animated ones, the Ice Ages are in second.

Not the best kids show
This was a let down. The story is too complicated for little kids and the inclusion of some language and scary type violence made it almost too much. The comedy is mainly aimed at adults, my kids just weren't into it at all.

CRACKER - Watch out for racial slur!
Unfortunately critics and news media ignored the racial slur made by Marty the zebra (voice by Chris Rock). When the animals first arrived on the beach (from the shipwreck), Marty declared it to be "Cracker lacking". If you've never heard "cracker", it's a derogatory term for Caucasians similar to "honky". So Chris Rock, as the zebra, joyously dances on the beach and jubilates that there are no white people! We know Mr. Rock knows the meaning of "cracker" as he has also used it in his sit-com show, "Everybody Hates Chris" (aired on cable station UPN, Thursdays 8pm PST). It was used in this show's (first?) episode where the young Chris first goes to his new school and meets the school bully. Chris Rock narrates the show as the adult voice for a young school age boy also named Chris. In this episode, young Chris eats his dad's turkey (the next day's lunch). The adult Chris explains that his mother is upset because without lunch his dad will be grumpy and may accidentally call his white boss a cracker and thus lose his job causing them to have to move back to the ghetto. I saw this in the theatre. Can anyone confirm that this slur is also on the DVD/Video release?

a pre-teen hoot
Fun movie for New York City bred 11 year olds. Simulated swearing, poor language habits and sex humor make this inappropriate for the apparent target audience (6-9). Inside New york area jokes limit interest.

Not impressed
My kids (ages 2,5,8,10) love movies and couldn't wait for this one, but once the DVD arrived it took three days for us to finish the movie! They couldn't stay interested! The older two really tried to finish it but just didn't understand some concepts enough to stay focused. The younger 2 could have cared less. In fact my 2 yr old cried every time we mentioned trying to watch it! The loyalty of friendships was great but the language was a problem and some situations were, too. This is not a movie I plan on buying!

Really good!
Very funny film with only a few vulgarities. Fine for most kids.
I rate this title on for age 8 and give itreally good when I saw Madagascar
Ok, I saw Madagascar with my kids a few months ago. We were at the snack line with my hyperactive daughter, my calm, talkative boy and I with my third coming in to our family in a month. My daughter wanted all the candy in the window, litterally! My son was like " What should I get, the Gummi Bears and Popcorn or malt balls and Popcorn?" He made his mind and got malt balls, licorice, coke, Hi-C and 2 bags of popcorn ( the snacks were even more than the movie! lol!) So, the movie started and my daughter was so excited, she almost choked on her popcorn, luckily she didnt. After the movie, I was suprised how good it was for a kids movie, but almost inappropriate enough to be a teen movie. I suppose the content was not that extreme. Any way the money was all worth it!

Disappointed in movie
My husband and I took my 10-year-old to see this movie and he fell asleep during the show. It was rather disappointing and even my daughter didn't really seem to enjoy it much. I thought the four main characters were amusing enough, but the jungle animals were mostly annoying. I got tired of them quickly. I did enjoy the loyalty between the animal friends, but was hoping for more.

Exiciting!!!
This movie was excellent. It had some language and adult situations, that most children would not get. I think smaller children would enjoy the movie's music and adventure. I took my three year old daughter to see it and she loved it to say the least. She ask me daily, has Madagascar came out on DVD yet? I enjoyed the movie my self.

Funny and kids can learn from it.
Kids will definitely learn about importance of frienship and social relationships and how it impacts their life even in their young age. This movie is worth watching..

Great and Funny!
I loved it! The Penguins are a great, funny addition! When I was young, I didn't notice most of the "bad" stuff. Its a nice movie. There are a few scary scenes, but they are mixed with humor. One scene Alex asks "Where are the people?" KIng Julian replies, "They're up there." You see two skeletons hanging on the tree by old parachutes, as well as a crashed plane. While that may be frightening, Julain interrupts by saying, "Don't you love the people? Not a very lively bunch, though." its a great movie. A lot of kids will just ignore the bad things, I know I did. You can also teach them to not say those things.
- I rate this title on for age 6 and give itMy concerns are:
- Excessive violence
- Inappropriate language
- Negative role models
Watch out, things may slip out.
Madagascar is a great movie. It's all about zoo animals that escape because one of their friends wants to be in somewhere that has wide open spaces. It sounds good, but there is some bad language. In one part, Alex (lion) says "Sugar Honey Ice Tea" which stands for s**t. (Some kids won't notice that.) Some role models aren't good like the foosa that attack lemurs, and the lion is shot with tranquilizer darts. Finally, in one scene, an old lady kicks Alex and hits him with her handbag. It's a good film, but watch out for one use of bad language and bad role models.

I like to watch it-watch it!
Ah, the perfect movie. Granted, it's rated PG for a reason. The good thing is that the PG content won't be caught by youger kids, and will make older people laugh as well. I won't be surprised if this becomes the next "Shrek"- it's already better than the first.

Really cute, but some iffy stuff.
This movie is a great family favorite..........just try to stop singing "move it, move it" after its over! I do have a couple problems with it, though. The first and main, is that there are a couple things, while not sexual, they made me cringe. (and I'm usually open-minded!) They are, in order of appearance: Gloria has seaweed, crabs, and a lobster stuck to her to look like a bathing suit, and says "okay boys, party's over", and when alex tries to get melman out of the box he's stuck in, he uses a long pole to ram him out, running straight at his behind. While this doesn't sound bad, trust me, it makes you cringe. There is also a lot of euphemisms, that will pass right over little kid's heads (only if they don't know any swear words) such as "hoover dam!" THere are even some blatant swears, such as he-- and dam-. Then finally, the worst part. In the middle to end of the movie, there is a montage to "what a wonderful world, where smal, cute animals are killed. The worst one is last, when, after being depressed, the animals come upon an ADORABLE baby duck. Your heart skips a beat on just how cute it is. And then, your hopes are dashed away because a shark comes up and violently eats it.This disturbed me SOOOO much when I first saw it....... And I was in the seventh grade!!!!!! Maybe it's just because I'm empathetic or something, but I hate this scene, and i never watch it.
