What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this comedy is based on an incredibly lowbrow sketch following two club-going brothers who bob their heads, bump into and harass women, and have no greater goal than to make it past the velvet rope at the Roxbury nightclub. As with most broad comedies, there are close-ups of cleavage and sex (or lack thereof) jokes in several scenes. It's not the base potty humor of similar comedies, but it's dumbed-down comedy that's a better fit for teens than tweens.

  • Doug and Steve stay focused to make their dream of getting into a prestigious nightclub come true.
  • Security officers throw the Butabi brothers out of a nightclub and an office building.
  • There are close-ups of bikini-clad women at the beach and the Butabi brothers wear thong-like Speedo swim briefs. In one extended scene, the brothers are in adjoining rooms about to sleep with women they met a club. Steve puts his hand on Emily's breast; they are heard briefly having sex. During a comical sex scene, Emily (clothed) has a laughably loud orgasm and then slips under the covers (oral sex is implied).
  • One "f--k." Otherwise basic PG-13 curses: "ass," "assjob," "bitch," "s--t," and minor insults: "jackass," "idiots," "losers," etc.
  • Not applicable.
  • The Butabis suggest sniffing air from whipped-cream bottles. Various clubgoers drink alcohol.

What's the story?

Adapted from the recurring sketch featuring Will Ferrell and and Chris Kattan as head-bobbing club regulars who bump and grind against unsuspecting women and dance to the Haddaway song "What Is Love," A NIGHT AT THE ROXBURY follows the goofball brothers Doug and Steve Butabi after they leave the club. The brothers work for their father (the always funny Dan Hedaya) in the family-run silk-flower shop. Without any serious aspirations beyond clubbing, the clueless duo bumbles around trying and failing to get into the Roxbury. Thanks to the help of Richard Grieco (the brothers' apparent idol), the Butabi brothers finally make it past the Roxbury bouncer and even meet its owner, a wisely uncredited Chazz Palminteri. For once, the Butabis show some pluck and spark the owner's interest in their ideas to improve the club.

Is it any good?

Anyone who remembers the release of the Julia Sweeney movie It's Pat knows that comedies based on regular Saturday Night Live sketches rarely turn out as good as Wayne's World. Roxbury, the Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan entry into the SNL-flick genre, is no exception.

The plot is completely inane and exists solely to set up Ferrell and Kattan's gags. While no doubt Ferrell's immense popularity might make this oldie worth watching, anyone else will want their rental fee returned.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about the Butabi brothers' quest to get into the Roxbury. On what basis do clubgoers get let in? Are they superficial reasons? Saturday Night Live fans can discuss the best movies based on an SNL sketch. Does this one make the grade? Despite both being long-time members of the cast, Will Ferrell has become a much bigger movie star than Chris Kattan. Who are the most talented comedians to "graduate" from SNL?

Very Funny Movie!
But there is something all of these sites arent putting in there review. There's a quick scene of nudity, that if you look closely to the screen you can find. Overall: Hillarious Movie

Funny but not great comedy is very raunchy
1998's attempted Saturday Night Live skit-to-movie adaptation is not so much a movie, but more like just a short, 81 minute series of skits that are almost completely right out of the show, so it's more like just watching a greatest hit's collection of the skits from the Saturday Night Live television show from the 90's. But, while this movie is definitely far from even being very good, it is still a fairly decent movie, and while it is so short, it actually manages to have some very funny scenes with Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan that are also definitely reminiscent of some of the SNL skits funniest moments. But, despite the PG-13 Rating, this movie is not appropriate for young kids or even most tween's: There is frequent crude and sexual humor with three very graphic but somewhat comical sex scenes that actually fairly much push the limit for the PG-13 rating. Also, there is some infrequent profanity with at least one useof the F-word. Finally, there is a extremely brief and subtle drug reference near the beginning of the movie that only older audiences watching the movie will get. So, it may not be a great comedy, or even a terribly memorable one, but it still makes you laugh while it's going.
