What to talk about

Talk to your kids

Families can talk about the real origins of the Revolutionary War. They might want to look up Francis Marion, known as the Swamp Fox, who, like the fictional Benjamin Martin, defeated the British soldiers by using his knowledge of the local topography and by staying away from open-field battles. It is also worth talking about the notions of rules within wartime, as shown in the negotiations between Benjamin and Cornwallis. How do enemies agree on rules? What should those rules be? Why did Benjamin refuse to give his name? Why did Cornwallis care about limiting the damage to civilians?

What's the story?

What's the story?

THE PATRIOT stars Mel Gibson as Benjamin Martin, a veteran of the British army who was a hero during the French and Indian war. Twenty years later, he has no love for the monarchy but some skepticism about the alternative. He asks, "Why should I trade one tyrant 3000 miles away for 3000 tyrants one mile away?" and "I haven't got the luxury of principles." More than that, his memories of the atrocities of war, his own as well as the enemy's, and his passion for protecting his seven children won't allow him to fight again. But when Benjamin's son is killed by a British soldier, he throws guns to his younger boys, straps several onto himself, and goes off to fight his own personal war, a sort of Robin Hood crossed with Terminator.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

There's a long Hollywood tradition of reluctant heroes who are forced into violence, thus giving us the best of both worlds with a hero whose heart is in the right place, but whose muscles and gun are, too. So, Benjamin has to find a reason to fight. It would have been nice if that reason had something to do with liberty and democracy, but instead it's about revenge. The only heartfelt struggle for independence in the movie is teen-age rebellion. And, producing/directing team Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich play fast and loose with historical facts here. Colonel Tavington is a villain so reprehensible that he not only burns down a church filled with civilians, he enjoys it. This level of cartoonish exaggeration makes it harder for us to engage with the characters.

Still, this is a very enjoyable summer popcorn movie, sumptuously and excitingly filmed, and rousingly entertaining. The action sequences play well, and the black characters are treated with as much dignity as possible. Gibson delivers, as always. He is utterly compelling whether he is hacking an opponent to death, looking tenderly at a tiny daughter who will not speak to him, or agonizing over his past sins. Fellow Aussie Heath Ledger is superb as oldest son Gabriel, at first impatient to join the fight, later a brave and mature soldier and an ardent suitor.

Graphic Violence, but Uplifting Messages...
When I came on this page and saw that parents rated this movies as "iffy ages 12+", I was very surprised. While not as bad as other R-rated films, this movie shouldn't be shown to anyone under the age of 14. That said, though it is violent, it is filled with positive messages of bravery, acceptance, and loyalty. This is a very violent film. Countless people are shot throughout the entire film, most with accompanying blood that sprays or spurts. One man has his leg taken off by a cannon ball (brief shot of the bloody knee), and another is decapitated by a cannon ball (it's in slow-mo; the cannon takes the head off, and you see the rest of the body for a brief moment before it cuts away). A man gets a tomahawk in the head, and another is bayoneted through the throat at close range. However, random soldiers being shot isn't the violence parents need to be most concerned with. Many major characters are killed, one of which is a child. Children are repeatedly threatened through the movie, with guns, torches, and the like. In one heartwrenching scene, a whole town is brought together in a church that is later burned. You see the screaming, crying people trying to break loose, and flames consuming the outside of the church. While no burning is actually seen, I think that it is this intense, emotional scene that given the movie its R-rating. No sex or language to speak of. Highly recommended.

Good for mature teens.
I normally avoid war films like the plague, but I didn't really have much choice in this matter, as my teacher actually showed it to our class last year in History when we were covering the American Revolution. My entire class loved it, and although it was quite gruesome with some heartbreaking bits (like when Benjamin's son dies) it has an overall happy ending, and some really beautiful parts. This is the only war film I would be willing to watch again.

an evil creation that is too violent to like
probably one of the most violent movies ever. people are shot (including a little boy), stabbed by bayonets, or hit by a pickaxe that was thrown at them.

Lots and lots of blood. One character gets his head blown off by a cannon.

VERY graphic violence, but great movie. Not a kids' movie!
My rating: R for bloody war violence. Positive Role Models: 4/5 - Mel Gibson plays a war hero who is rather true to his family. Violence: 5/5 - Extremely bloody: mostly blood spurting as a result of shooting, stabbing, or slicing; one extensive scene features Gibson hacking away at a body with a hatchet; another involves a quick decapitation; another depicts a man committing suicide (shooting himself in the head). Sex: 1/5 - One or two passing references. Language: 1/5 - Only goes up to a few uses of "d--n" and "hell". Consumerism: 0/5 - No problem. Drinking & Drugs: 2/5 - Not much; a few passing drinks.

Although a bit violent, a must see for all Americans.
A must see for all Americans. The Patriot shows what was sacrificed by the men who fought in the American Revolution in order to secure our independence and our freedom. It is quite violent. There is a good bit of blood and gore(obviously not for the squeemish), but if you can handle that, you can handle this movie. The message this movie puts across is 100% good.

I Cheered!
This film should have been rated PG-13. Sure, the war scenes are graphic, but there is no "senseless" violence; but a rather enlightening depiction of the extreme difficulty & sacrifices that our forefathers were willing to endure in order to ensure freedom for their children & future generations. It is also quite accurate, as evidenced by the historical book: "The Life of Patrick Henry". We consider this film a "MUST SEE" for parents who desire that their children learn about REAL US HISTORY, & the morality & faith behind the decisions that shaped our great nation.

It's OK!!!
My social studies teacher showed this to my whole team in 5th grade and we were perfectly fine. Don't over react because it shows what the American Revolution was really like and doesn't soften it up and it is a big part of American history.

This Review Is About the Extended Version
I'm normally not a big fan of war movies but the only reason I'm not is because they remind me of history class, and that's a really dumb reason not to like them anyway, but this is a great movie. It's proof that you CAN have a clean action film and it be good. In fact, any film that isn't clean is stupid in the first place. Of course, there was one little inappropriate "joke" but besides that, a few kisses, and the D-word occasionally, this is a clean movie. I am most definitely not counting the violence at all whatsoever. This movie deserved to be rated R. Children kill, are killed, and one even says he was proud of himself for killing. You can barely see what's going on through all the blood. I don't mean that literally, you can plainly see a man digging a hatchet into people's backs while other men are getting their legs and heads shot off by cannonballs, but I was surprised I could see that much. It was all so realistic, I often forgot I was watching a movie. This thing is a heart-wrencher too. Kids are crying through the whole film and, boy, do they have reason to. The smallest girl just broke my heart! And what I really like about this film is the message. Too many don't realize that, "A shepherd must tend his flock, and at times fight off the wolves!"

Not for the weak-stomach
This is a great movie that truly showed what it was like in the revolutionary war. But this is a very violent movie. D--n and hell is said a couple of times. There is a scene with a bar full of drunk people but its not bad. This is a great movie for all Americans to see. Now to the violence, this movie is very bloody and gory, when someone is shot, you obviously see where he was, but thats not all of it. In one scene someone gets tomahawked in the head, after he drops, the main character, takes it out of his head and repeatedly jabs it into him until he is COVERED in blood. There are some bayonette stabbings, one suicide, 100s of people are burned alive in a church by the red coats, a man is decapitated in slo-mo, a little boy gets shot in the beginning of the movie, and there is a very brutal stabbing. Again, this is an amazing movie but just watch out for violence. Comparing this movie to saving private ryan, there is way more violence and no where near the amount of cussing.

I love this movie!
Very entertaining but things can get VERY intense! But since the movie is trying to be realistic then it needs to be intense like saving private ryan! By the way- we are learning about the war in school and are going to watch this movie tomorrow!! I think some people will be scarred for life!! Lol

Suggested MPAA Rating: R for strong bloody war violence. The only reason it's not PG-13 is because of brief scenes of blood squirting.

good story-very violent
extremely graphic and intese violence, not as bad as Braveheart. not for anyone 14 or under

A movie that should be exclusively for teens and not earlier
This movie is a farce. Full stop. Well, okay, it has a great soundtrack, and decent effects, but that's about it. This movie is washing white America's early history during the revolutionary war. According to them, there was no slavery, the blacks worked voluntarily. The ones who fought on the American side would even receive a payment (yeah right). The American rebels are ruffy, but yet heart-true good samaritians, and the British are Nazis. Yes, Nazis, because it was originally the Nazis in WW2, who massacred whole towns, or locked the townsfolk into their church and ultimately burnt it down. Such things never happened in this war of indepedence (although the American militias themselves liked to torture loyalists to death, èn masse). This is called politically correct history, folks. Additionally, the protagonist (played by Mel Gibson, who is known for having extremely anglophobic roles) insists to be a pacifist throughout the entire beginning of the movie, but seemingly has no problem to hack a fleeing British soldier to Kötbullar. Throughout the entire movie, he acts in revenge, not for the actual revolution, whose causes are not once mentioned. This film is neither acceptable for history buffs, nor for younger audiences, or people who speak for the rules of war (don't kill POV's or surrendered soldiers, especially if you promised not to).

Graphically violent Revolution epic
This extremely violent, bloody and graphic Revolutionary war tale is one of the best movies of 2000. Mel Gibson holds his own very well. i was impressed. But, some parts could have been cut, including a few overlong dialogue pieces. Bottom Line: This is a kind of movie you have to see at least once. Thanks for reading! - Movie Man

Good acting, deep story, minimal swearing, but tons of violence
This is an incredible movie. This movie truly shows what the revolutionary war was like for us who were not there when it took place. However, this is one of the most violent films you will find around. For example, a guys head gets blown off by a cannon ball, blood guts and gore galore, Benjamin hacks a red coat to pieces, off camera but you can see the blood, because of the fact an officer killed his son in cold blood, Col. William Tavington and the red coats burn a Church with all the towns people in it, John Billings shoots himself in the head because Tavington killed his family and burned there house, and there are many more examples of violence. Now, with all that negative stuff said, this is a really good movie, the acting is incredible, the story is deep, and there is minimal swearing. 4 out of 5
