What parents need to know

Parents need to know that while there's less adult-oriented humor and fewer innuendoes in this half-hour holiday special than in the full-length Shrek movies, you can expect plenty of the usual potty humor -- burping, gas passing, nose picking, and vomiting (the latter of which is limited to a chocolate chip from Gingerbread Man's upset tummy, but it's quickly eaten by Donkey).

Positive messages: Potty humor is prevalent -- burping, passing gas, and nose picking are common fare. In one scene, Gingerbread Man vomits a chocolate chip, which Donkey promptly eats.
Violence & scariness: Some play fighting includes kicking and slapping. An animated gingerbread cookie is eaten by Santa while her companion watches helplessly. Shrek is accidentally set on fire.
Sexy stuff: Rare, very mild innuendo. For example, in one scene, Shrek mentions giving Fiona the "goose," after which he quickly presents a cooked goose.
Language: No swearing, but occasional use of "butt."
Consumerism: No overt advertising/product placement in this installment in the franchise, but kid-targeted Shrek merchandise (toys, games, clothing, accessories, DVDs) already line store shelves.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about why specials like this are produced. Is it just to entertain kids, or does the studio have other goals? What might those be? Did watching this show make you want more Shrek stuff? Do you think that was the plan? Aside from ads, how else does the media market to kids? Families can also discuss how this special compares to the movies. Did you like this show as much as the movies? Why or why not? Which one is your favorite so far?

What's the story?

What's the story?
In SHREK THE HALLS, a half-hour holiday special starring everyone's favorite ogre, his new family, and a colorful ensemble of other fairy tale creatures, the story picks up just before Christmas. While everyone else is filled with cheer for the upcoming holiday, ornery Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) has no desire to celebrate -- but for the sake of Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and their babies, he attempts to do his part to make the family's first holiday together a memorable one. Unfortunately, the fairy tale creatures take Shrek's lack of yuletide joy as cause for intervention and show up unannounced on his doorstep to "help."

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Shrek the Halls will certainly entertain young fans of the movies, and if your kids are already immune to the series' potty humor, there's no cause for concern here. And grown-ups who enjoy Shrek's arch humor will appreciate that the show fits seamlessly into the movies' storyline, from plot and character continuity to the recognizable voice cast. But you might want to brace yourself for a refreshed interest in ubiquitous Shrek merchandise like toys, games, DVDs, and clothing -- just in time for your kids' holiday wish lists, of course.

Funny Christmas special
This is so funny! I came across it on t.v. one night and it made me crack up. There is only a little violence most of it kicking and play fighting, and the gingerbread gets eaten but it's just hilarous. I recommend it for everyone.

Shrek the Halls is so cool!
I love ''Shrek the Halls,'' but some of the violence makes young children afraid. Watch this special with the entire family!

Just what I expected
My 6 years old liked it. It contains the potty humor you can expect with Shrek. Only scary part was that Santa eat Gingerbread man's girlfriend. But when it get's really scary someone interrupts the story telling the others that it was nothing like that. Nothing really worried me here. Go see it :)

Crude and funny Christmas special for the whole family
Sexual Content (Not an Issue): A brief, mild innuendo that will go over kids' heads. Violence (Pause): Comic violence includes kicking, slapping, a gingerbread woman being eaten, and Shrek being set on fire. Language (Not an Issue): None. Social Behavior (Not an Issue): Shrek is initially a bit of a scrooge, and his friends make a mess in his home. But Shrek learns to be hospitable and kind to them, no matter how annoying they may be. Crude humor occurs often. Commercialism (Not an Issue): Part of the Shrek franchise. Drug/Alcohol/Tobacco (Not an Issue): None.

A holiday with the worlds favorite ogre.
The same iffy-feeling from the films is inserted into this Christmas special, but it's funny and a pleasure to watch. Santa picks his nose instead of just touching it ot go up the chiminy. Fiona and the ogre-babies "play kazoo" in thier sleep by breaking wind. Nothing as bad as some of the movies.

Funny without any Problems. Cute and gives Shrek (and his new family) a Christmas.
I enjoyed Shrek the Halls. My parents did, too. It was really funny while it lasted and I really enjoyed it. It will appeal to 8 and up, but there are no restrictions, unless you are against the "Shrek" franchise.
