Its a perfectly funny movie for older kids and adults...but I was very unhappy with the sexual content. I can get past some potty talk and even some violence because I can use things things as examples to my children of how NOT to be, but why throw in things like the gingerbread man wearing pink thong underwear or songs and dances where the fairy godmother has her "sexy" guys (or something to that effect as she calls them) smacking their own bottoms???? To me it was not just the innuendos that would supposedly go over kids heads (which I do not agree with either, exposure is exposure) but it is the out and out in your face stuff that most parents do not even seem to NOTICE. Has our society really become that desensitized to sexual content??? I should not have to explain this stuff to my kids in this manor. Its one thing to explain sexual function, love, etc. to your children, another to expose them to the raunchy side of it...they will experience that all on their own one day, they do not need to see it in their cartoons as kids! For that reason, I think this was best left for a teen and up audience...though I really would not love it for MY kids even as teens!
I watched this with my 3 year old. Whilst there was nothing in it that I didn't want him to see, much of the humour went way over his head. Also he spent most of the film asking me why Shrek and Fiona were being nasty to everyone
Sexual Content (Not an Issue): Some kissing and innuendo.
Violence (Pause): A character is threatened with pitchforks and torches, a bird explodes, a character is eaten by a dragon, and characters are constantly in peril. Some slapstick.
Language (Pause): Ass, D**n, and crap.
Social Behavior (On): A strong theme of the movie is accepting others for what's on the inside.
Commercialism (Not an Issue): No product placement in the movie, but Shrek is a huge marketing empire.
Drug/Alcohol/Tobacco (Not an Issue): None.
a kid movie that has too much that is not for little kids
It's not bad, but it is not really a kid's movie. The jokes are often about mature themes, involving drinking, romance, etc. I do not understand who in Hollywood thinks this is OK in an animated movie aimed at kids. My young boys do not get the jokes, so some might argue that it is harmless, but repeated exposure to this kind of thing early on doesn't seem good. Do I later want my young men to consider young women based on their preferred alcoholic beverage? No.
This like Beauty and the Beast has a good message that we should judge others by their inside, but has some things that are mildly inappropriate. Dragon eats Farquadd, and other comic violence. There's some language like the d-word and puns of the A Word for Donkey. Ha ha ha! We never heard that (oh wait Pinocchio!) However the characters are good role models, and the film is very funny.
(Shrek) is a funny family film that involves some gross, but funny
parts. This IS an animated film, but this animated film does include
some suggestive humor younger children(ages 5 - 7)won't understand and mild language including some brief insulting and brief mild cursing.(Even though I had some issue for younger kids about this movie) I give this funny animated fairytale an ON for ages 7 - 8 + and an A -. This is one funny animated family you and your family DO NOT want to miss on DVD today.
Great movie! I did not like how violent it was or the potty humor they used. They were mostly swears like "butt", "crap", "a-s", "d--m" and "stupid". The beginning scared me when Shrek roared at all the hunters away. Which is why it is not for little kids.
This was a different take on fairytales. This is a very good movie, but I could have done without the crude humor. The movie has good messages about accepting yourself for who you are no matter what. It has some language (a*s, but it's used to agrees Donkey) and spme scenes of violence/peril. The dragon isn't too scary, but it may scare kids. As I mentioned before, there's some crude humor (like how bad the ogress smell) but I actually didn't get the innuendo, but I did watch it when I was younger.
This movie is very good and suitable for just about anyone
This movie is really good and the only iffy things are some comic cartoon violence, language like d*mn h*ll and c*ap and very mild innuendo that will go over younger kids heads. Great fairytale movie.
Definitly a great movie. Our family loves it, mostly my son and husband. My husband gets it much more than James, because it really does "go right over his head". It really is a DreamWorks best. THE best Shrek. I would bet though, that my daughter isn't the only one who doesn't like "gross" movies.
Ogre Is The Man!I Love Shrek. Its One Of The Best Dreamworks Ever. But They Are Some Nasty Scenes That Will Literelly Make Toddlers Nautious. So Other Than That Shrek Is An Amazing Movie!
Love this movie. Very funny. What makes it soo funny is because of the fairy tail animals and DONKEY. It has good role models because in the begining Fiona only looks on the outside of Shrek and not the inside but later on she starts liking him for who he is. Two thumbs up
