What parents need to know
Parents need to know that while this movie isn't particularly scary or violent for young children, there are some scenes that may disturb the youngest set, particularly toward the end, when evil characters nearly cut Stich in two and threaten to teleport Hawaiian earth girl Lilo to another realm. There is also a scene when Lilo learns that a group of girls have excluded her from a camp-out, calling her a "liar" and Lilo and Stitch "total freaks." On the other hand, the film emphasizes the "one of a kind" traits that make each character unique and Lilo waxes eloquently about her "family," even when its members may come from another planet!
What's the story?
In this installment of the series, Lilo, a Hawaiian earth girl who has been snubbed by her peers, and Stitch, an energetic alien who also has his share of mishaps with the island natives, team up to save Dr. Jumba and Stitch's 625 other "cousins" -- science experiments brought to earth by Jumba -- from the evil Dr. Gantu. Their mission is eventually to find homes for them all (a launching pad for the TV series Lilo & Stitch).
Is it any good?
While the film's promotional line reads "Stitch was Experiment 626...Meet the Other 625," it really on focuses on only two of his "cousins," -- a troublemaker who causes power surges on the island -- and a character more focused on sandwich-making than anything else. The plot can be difficult to follow if one hasn't seen the original Lilo & Stitch, and much of it may be incomprehensible to young children.
While this film purports to be about science experiments, it does little to indulge the curiosity of young minds. Instead, STITCH! THE MOVIE merely presents a slightly different spin on the age-old battle between good and bad characters. Some children, more likely grade-schoolers who enjoy watching cartoon characters battle it out, will enjoy this film, but few adults will find it engaging. With the film running just under an hour without the credits, parents will fortunately find that the time passes quickly.
What families can talk about
Families can talk about whether people who are not related to each other can still be close, and show loyalty toward one another. How would they handle being teased by children who would only want to associate with people who looked or acted like them?
