Fantastic movie - not worthy of R rating
Don't let the R rating scare you. This movie is fantastic. Apart from a few brief scenes including intense language (though it is used in the context of the story and not out of vulgarity), this movie is absolutely appropriate for young teens. Although there is a significant amount of profanity used, these scenes are vital to the film's message and are far less worse than what I personally hear every day in school. The messages and highlights in this movie far outweigh the questionable material. PG-13 would have been a more accurate rating. Absolutely a movie worth watching.

A great movie that isn't boring
I thought this movie was going to be so boring the moment the movie started. I was proved wrong! I loved this movie and Geoffrey Rush acted so well! The movie could be really boring for young kids, but kids nine and older will like it a bit more then 8-. Colin Firth (The Duke of York then to king) doesn't stutter as much when is angry. So, he talks clearly when he swears, and he says a good amount of swear words.
Overall- It should be PG-13 Maybe even PG, Not R.
He just swears throught the movie like bloody etc. mild language
He just goes on a rampage saying f--- bas---- etc.
I reccommend this movie

Shouldn't Have Been Rated R
First off, I think that "The King's Speech" shouldn't be rated R. PG-13 would have been fine, but it's just because of some vulgar language (including the "F-Bomb") that it was given the rating of R.
Aside from that, this movie is absolutely wonderful. All of the characters are so relatable and the acting is superb. I am 14 years old and I saw it, and I think most other kids around my age could see it too. Some of the intense stuff may go over younger kids' heads so I think the youngest age to see it is 13.
Such a wonderful movie, and such a wonderful message!

Great for all audiences.
This movie is one of the best movies I've ever seen in a theater. It shows positive messages of Lionel Logue helping the King get his voice ready for the speech he must do. A problem is, King Bertie has some disabilities in his speaking. The main reason it was rated R was for a scene where Lionel tries a method of getting Bertie to speak and not stammer, by swearing. Of course, Bertie is only using it to help, not to destruct it. It shouldn't have been rated R just for something as harmless as this. At the end, Lionel helps him out during his speech and they become best friends.

Great drama, completely fine for any teen who has heard someone cuss in their lifetime :D
The reason this is rated R is for the sole purpose of demographical audience. The movie is aimed at adults, and some adults will turn away from a movie if it has a lower MPAA rating, thinking it's a "teens' movie". This is an great historical drama and will definetely lift your spirits. As mentioned before, there's an important scene where the king lets out around 15 cuss words in one little 2 minutes, but it's for the sake of the plot. My MPAA rating: PG-13 for some strong language.

this is probably the most fun I had watching a dramatic movie, the best moments are when he is being taught, priceless. It's a really funny movie, but you could still take it seriously, and the acting is fabulous. You might have a problem with the language usage, but they never use any of it in an aggressive way, it's just a method of teaching, but there are a few uses of "Bloody" in aggressive manners, The main character smokes often, but he stops the habit the more you get into the movie.

Ignore the "R" rating
Why this movie is rated "R" is beyond me. This is a PG-13 movie that your 12 year old should be able to see. The "R" is probably due to couple of scenes where the "F" word is repeatedly spoken. But mind you it is not gratuituous cursing. It is used to demonstrate an improtnat point of the movie. The positive messages in this movie far outweigh the fould language concerns. One of the best message movies about perserverance in overcoming personal obstacles. Also a history lesson. Excellent film.

I think the 15+ rating of this is way off. There is nothing in this that a child shouldn't see other than one burst of profanity. For the rare child that hasn't heard such things (hard to even walk around the mall without hearing such words), it could be discussed with them beforehand.
Great movie that teaches about humility, accepting help even when you are reluctant, the importance one person can make in someone's life, creativity (i.e. not all solutions are "mainstream"), and redemption. Finally, a film that is worth going to.

R rating undeserved...and a shame
This movie is beyond excellent. My son is two weeks shy of 12 and proclaimed it the best movie he's ever seen. Some context - he doesn't watch any violent movies....in fact he doesn't watch many movies at all and did not grow up with cartoons or other typical kid-television. Not sure how that effects his appraisal of it - but just want you to know we're not dealing with a kid who is jaded by seeing lots of violence and/or swearing and/or sexual situation in any context. Not one moment of boredom from either of us. I wish for more movies like this - easy enough for the kids to understand without endless explanation, yet challenging enough to have wonderful conversations for days.

Perfect for older kids but with guidance tweens as well.
This is a great movie and provides and important lesson in not giving up and facing your fears. We plan on letting our 12 and 15-year-old see it when the movie comes out in dvd. What is most attractive about this movie is that it is witty, but sensitive. The expletives are not directed at anyone but more at the frustration thatBertie feels for his affliction.

Great for historic interest; do not listen to "R" rating
This was a very well acted movie and FAR more interesting and enlightening than a lot of violent garbage rated merely "PG". As other reviewers have pointed out, the "R" rating is simply for a scene in which profanity is used in the context of avoiding stuttering; it is not real profanity. A simple explanation to any teen would suffice in dealing with that. Even some mature tweens would be able to handle it. If you do go with the kids, it's an opportunity to talk about a number of interesting themes. But mostly you will be enthralled with the characters. (side note: some historians have quibbled with some portrayals, e.g., of Winston Churchill, but that's a bit beside the point).

R Rated??? Hardly. More like a strong PG.
THE KING'S SPEECH is the reason the movie ratings system is ineffective. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a movie that you WANT your kids to see. It is inspiring, uplifting, positive, intelligent, and offers nothing but the best role models for teens. It encourages audiences to be confident with themselves and follow their dreams. It tells audiences that hard work is necessary to achieve your goals, but no task is unachieveable if you are dilligent. It paints beautiful, healthy portraits of friendship, marriage, and parental figures.
Then, however, we get to the R rating, which is, to be frank, really stupid. The main character curses twice in the film (each outburst lasts fifteen seconds or less, and that is all the language in the film) because he doesn't stammer when he curses. In these outbursts, the "f" word is used about ten times, in a rushed, random manner as well as "d**n", "h**l", "b****rd", and "t*t"s. The cursing is quick, inoffensive, and isn't sexual. It could hardly have come in a more harmless context. Aside from the language, there is nothing at all objectionable in the entire film. No violence, and no sex.
Despite this, however, no one under 17 can get into the film alone. Please, parents, don't let the rating scare you away from this movie. If kids want to see it, let them. Even encourage them to! They will leave uplifted and inspired. So will you!

A Triumphant Masterpiece, Completely Appropriate for Mature Kids 12+
The King's Speech is the best film to be released in 2010. Not only does the film supply empowering messages of self-confidence and perserverance to overcome obstacles, it is also acted to perfection with phenomenal performances by Colin Firth (who is all but guaranteed to win Best Actor for this role), Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter (both of whom are nominated for Supporting Actor and Actress Oscars). The film is very historically accurate but is also incessantly charming with witty, funny dialogue and characters who we know well without having met them. All of the actors in the film are perfectly cast and speak every line they are given with such fantastic feeling that you can't help but be drawn completely into the film. The film is funny without being a comedy, and it is dramatic without ever feeling heavy. Both of these are admirable feats in their own right. The only reason that the film was rated R (the fact that it was rated R in itself is an atrocity) is because of one scene (acted completely for comedic effect) where Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush utter a string of swears in order to understand why Firth's incapacitating stutter occurs. The scene was brilliant and there is worse language in PG-13 rated buddy comedies. Do not let the unfair rating turn you off this brilliant drama that every teenager and even mature tweens should see. The film is a true work of art and provides positive messages that any kid should learn from.

A beautiful story!
I took my 11 year old to see it. He SOOOOO did not want to go but I told him it was a true story...gave him a little background on it and he ended up liking it. I have no idea why it is rated R. Except for a couple minutes of a cursing rant (they use EVERY word), it is perfectly suitable for any age. The cursing was in a context that was important to the movie though...did not make it sound like it was normal to use the language. The story was touching and inspirational and I will be using it for years to come to remind my son of the obstacles people can overcome. We sat as far away from others as we could as I knew he would have a lot of questions during the film (he did).

Well worth It!
Is a great choice providing your children have the self control to not curse themselves. The messages are well worth the foul language. We are studying the 1920's in our homeschooling and this was a great historical boost to their awareness of englands royals and life in england during that time period. Streets still shared by cars and the occasional wagons, radio and film as new challenging creations impacting the world. Great examples of individual perseverance, compassion and honor. So glad I took the boys!

perfect for +12
There is no way this movie should be given an R rating. The language is no worse that what our middle-schoolers hear every day in the cafeteria. In the context and with the emotional background involved, the language is put into a context that is understandable. I would definitely take my 12 year old to see it.

Perfect for 12 yr olds and up
Great message. Great morals. It is rated R because of the cussing. I would rather my children watch this, than many PG13 shows that are too sexual, violent etc.

The good stuff
*
Messages:
The film has a stirring message: Our biggest limitations are the voices in our head that remind us of all of our imperfections and failures. But they're only voices, and our will is stronger than our fears. The film has some classist overtones, but they’re placed within historical context.
*
Role models:
The three main characters serve as strong role models: Lionel Logue, though somewhat untraditional in his approach to speech therapy (at least for the movie's time period), believes in himself so much that he’s able to help others do so, too. The queen is a lesson in being supportive without condescension, and King George VI is a man not to be denied his life because of his past.
What to watch out for
*
Violence:
A character struggles with his temper, which is fueled by frustration.
*
Sex:
A king abdicates from the throne because of his involvement with a divorcee. There are references to her “talents” behind closed doors.
*
Language:
Strong language includes “bas-ard,” “bloody,” "t-ts," "d--n," "a-s," "h--l," and “bugger.” And in one memorable scene, a man yells out a stream of words like “s--t” and “f--k.”
*
Consumerism:
Not an issue.
*
Drinking, drugs, & smoking:
Some social drinking (sherry, whisky, wine).

Don't hesitate to take your family to see this one.
This was a wonderful movie my daughters and niece (ages 10, 11 and 13) enjoyed, too. This is the craziest R rating i have seen in my life - there is definitely something wrong with the rating system - i would have rated this PG and wouldn't hesitate to take my 7 yr old to see it. Not a bad message to be had, unlike most PG and PG-13 movies out there. What a shame. A sweet movie about overcoming challenges, beautifully acted and simple.
