Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that this greatest hits collection contains some very sexy lyrics and runs the PC gamut from feminist to, um, "post-feminist" (in other words, lots of boy-toy sexiness).
Families listening together can enjoy the beautiful harmonies and apparent girlfriend chemistry, and discuss whether or not it matters how you get along personally when you make music with other people. They could also talk about why so many members of popular groups end up embarking on solo careers or why so many bands break up.
Common Sense Review
Reviewed By: Kathi Kamen Goldmark
Destiny's Child, the last great girl group of the twentieth century and also the first of the twenty-first, is a trio of gorgeous women with gorgeous voices. OK, so the players may have rotated around a bit and there were some very public falling-outs, but everyone seems to have calmed down. The result, this collection of twelve number-one hits spanning the group's entire history, plus three brand-new songs, is a must for true-blue old fans and a terrific introductory sampler for new ones.
The message careens between strong "we can do it" female role modeling and simpering boy-toy sexiness, ultimately canceling itself out. All mixed up chronologically, the songs are a varied and danceable mix of super-hits that show off the singers' remarkable vocal chemistry to best advantage. Whatever may have been happening (or not happening) outside of the studio, these women sound like the best of girlfriends when they sing.
Parental mileage may vary in terms of the sexual innuendo and coy flirtatiousness expressed on these pop hits, but there is no doubt that Destiny's Child delivers gorgeously produced songs, performed with impressive talent, passion, and -- yes -- teamwork.
