What Parents Need to Know

This review of #1's was written by Kathi Kamen Goldmark

Parents need to know that this greatest hits collection contains some very sexy lyrics and runs the PC gamut from feminist to, um, "post-feminist" (in other words, lots of boy-toy sexiness).

What’s the Story?

Destiny's Child, the last great girl group of the 20th century and also the first of the 21st, is a trio of gorgeous women with gorgeous voices. Okay, so the players may have rotated around a bit and there was a very public falling out or two, but everyone seems to have calmed down. The result: This collection of 12 number-one hits spanning the group's entire history, plus three brand-new songs. #1's is a must for true-blue fans and a terrific introductory sampler for new ones. Parental mileage may vary in terms of the sexual innuendo and coy flirtatiousness expressed on these pop hits.

Is It Any Good?

There is no doubt that Destiny's Child delivers gorgeously produced songs, performed with impressive talent, passion, and -- yes -- teamwork. The message careens between strong "we can do it" female role modeling and simpering boy-toy sexiness, ultimately canceling itself out. The songs are a varied and danceable mix of super-hits that show off the singers' remarkable vocal chemistry to best advantage. Whatever may have been happening outside of the studio, these women sound like the best of girlfriends when they sing.
